“To prevent this from escalating and to protect you, I need you to lie low for a few days. Don’t come into the Aerospace Institute. Just wait at home for news from us,” the Director said. “We’ll let you know when we’ve sorted this out and it’s safe for you to return.”
Danielle was silent for a few moments, understanding the Director's difficult position. The scandal was spreading like wildfire online, and if she stayed at the company, the rumors would only intensify, potentially dragging down the entire project team.
She nodded, her voice raspy in a way that was almost imperceptible. “I understand. Thank you, Director.”
“I’ve already organized my project work and uploaded it to the shared drive. You can contact me anytime if there are questions.”
Seeing her forced composure, the Director sighed. “Rest assured, we’ll get to the bottom of this and clear your name as quickly as possible. For now, get some rest. Try not to pay attention to the nonsense online and take care of yourself.”
Danielle’s knuckles turned white as she gripped her laptop. Just as she was about to mention more details about the project handover, the office door was pushed open gently.
Lorie walked in carrying an elegant thermos, the pale apricot dress she wore making her glow with health. When she saw Danielle, a perfectly crafted expression of surprise appeared on her face.
She hurried forward, her tone urgent. “Director, Chief Engineer Crawford is here too? I just heard about the rumors downstairs and rushed right over—”
“None of it is true! I can vouch for her. Chief Engineer Crawford has never come between me and Alex!”
As she spoke, she reached out and patted Danielle’s arm gently. “Chief Engineer Crawford, don’t take it to heart. Someone must be deliberately spreading lies. I’ve already messaged Alex and told him to contact the media and clear this up. We can’t let you suffer like this.”
