Her mind drifted back to when she was pregnant, when Alexander used to drop her off and pick her up just like that. One night, she had worked late, and when she walked out of the gate, she found him leaning against the car, fast asleep with only a thin jacket on. As she moved to wake him, his eyes fluttered open, and he smiled. "I'm never tired when I'm waiting for you."
Back then, his eyes had held a certain light, his voice full of a tenderness that was identical to how he now treated Lorie. Danielle’s pace slowed, a bitter pang echoing in her heart. Some people, some things, were destined to become the past—an irreparable regret buried deep inside.
"Chief Engineer Crawford, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" Lorie asked, noticing her strange mood.
"I'm fine." Danielle shook her head and quickened her pace toward the office building. "Let's go. We have a technical review this morning and need to prepare."
Inside the office, colleagues were already trickling in. Danielle put down her bag, turned on her computer, and pushed all her emotions to the back of her mind. She knew there was no point in dwelling on past regrets. What she needed to do now was focus on her work, take care of Niki, and live her own life.
During her lunch break, Danielle was about to rest her head on her desk for a quick nap when her phone vibrated. She glanced down and saw it was a call from Kirsten Delaney. Her finger paused for a moment before she swiped to answer.
"Danielle! You tell me the truth. What is this I'm hearing about Alexander getting engaged to that Lorie woman?" Kirsten’s voice was a rush of urgent concern, her indignation palpable even through the phone. "I just heard about it from someone yesterday. Has he lost his mind? After everything he put you through, now he pulls this!"
Danielle’s smile faded. Her fingers gently brushed the edge of her phone, her voice calm with an almost serene acceptance. "I’m not being tough, Kirsten. Everyone is their own person. The path he chooses, the person he chooses, that's his business. Right now, I just want to focus on my work and take good care of Niki. Nothing else matters anymore."
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end before Kirsten sighed. "Alright, as long as you know what you're doing. But if Alexander ever dares to bully you or Niki, I'll be the first one to go after him!"
"Okay," Danielle promised before hanging up.
