His tone was friendly, devoid of any official distance, clearly indicating a close relationship with Alexander.
Alexander stood to shake his hand, his demeanor composed. “You’re too kind, Director Linden. I was just doing my part.” He gently guided Danielle forward, his voice taking on a serious note. “This is Danielle, the lead engineer from the Aerospace Institute and the party involved in this case.”
Director Linden looked at Danielle with immediate admiration and quickly offered his hand. “Chief Engineer Crawford, I’ve heard all about you even without an introduction from Alex! The drone navigation system project you led was a tremendous contribution to our country’s aerospace program. Everyone in the field respects your work. A nation strong in technology needs young, talented people like you.”
Danielle was taken aback by the unexpected praise. She shook his hand firmly, her tone sincere. “You flatter me, Director Linden. It’s my honor and my duty to contribute to our country’s scientific advancement.”
“‘Duty’! Well said!” Director Linden laughed heartily and pulled up a chair. “I came here today specifically to tell you that the court has begun reviewing the new evidence submitted by Millie’s side. But rest assured, Chief Engineer Crawford, we will scrutinize every piece of material. We won’t let someone who has truly served the country be wronged.”
Danielle glanced at Alexander, finally understanding that his earlier calmness wasn't just blind confidence. He had already made all the necessary arrangements without saying a word.
Attorney Stewart opened his briefcase and spread several documents across the table. “Mr. Davidson, Chief Engineer Crawford, this is the counter-evidence we’ve gathered. It includes all of Chief Engineer Crawford's sign-off records for the project, the original technical archives, and a timeline of Millie’s previous access to project materials. All of this proves it was impossible for Chief Engineer Crawford to have leaked any classified information.”
Alexander picked up the files, his eyes scanning the dense text as his expression grew resolute. “This is crucial. Attorney Stewart, please organize it and submit it to the court as soon as possible.”
When they arrived, the same clerk who had been so dismissive earlier saw Director Linden and his eyes lit up. He scrambled out of his office, his face plastered with a fawning smile. “Director Linden! What brings you here? If you had let me know you were coming, I would have met you at the gate!”
When his gaze fell on Alexander, his pupils constricted. The previous indifference vanished, replaced by an obsequious attempt to curry favor. “Mr. Davidson, you’re here too! Please forgive me, I was blind for not recognizing you earlier. Please don’t hold it against me!”
Danielle watched his complete turnaround with a sense of irony. Just moments ago, when Leanne was there, he had worn an expression of smug contempt. Now, seeing Director Linden with Alexander, he was bending over backward, terrified of causing offense.
