"I didn't even get to see her."
"But I can picture it... She's so incredibly proud, and now she's being held captive in someone else's house. She's starving herself to fight back, and Sammie says he's going to stick an IV in her arm. He's forcing her to stay alive, forcing her to stay..."
Her throat seized, making it impossible to finish the sentence.
Alex's expression turned absolutely frigid.
He knew exactly how Rebecca operated.
Back when their group used to hang out, Rebecca was always the brightest, most untamable one of them all.
She did what she wanted and went where she pleased. Becoming a doctor for Doctors Without Borders wasn't a whim; it was a dream she had kept close to her heart for years.
Sammie was using the excuse of 'protecting her' to clip her wings, lock her away, and strangle her ambitions.
That wasn't love.
That was destruction.
"Why is he doing this?"
Danielle looked up at Alex, utterly bewildered. "She just wants to go abroad. She just wants to leave him and live her own life."
"He has his fiancée Chloe. He has his own world. Why won't he just let her go?"
Alex stayed silent for a moment before speaking. "From what little I know of him, he's not someone who acts without reason."
"There has to be a very specific reason why he's going to such extremes to keep her chained to him."
"There's no reason in the world that justifies holding her hostage," Danielle immediately shot back.
"Rebecca is an adult. She has the right to choose her own path. Even if it's dangerous, it's her choice to make."
"What gives him the right to decide for her?"
"I'm not defending him," Alex replied calmly.
His voice was steady. "I'm saying that if we want to get her out, we can't just barrel in blindly."
"Sammie is entirely unyielding right now. Calling the cops, making a scene, or trying to break in won't do anything but complicate the situation. It'll just make him hide her better and guard her closer."
A heavy weight settled in Danielle's chest, but she had to admit Alex was right.
