He thought a threat like this would be enough to make Danielle yield.
After all, he assumed women were inherently soft-hearted.
Especially when it came to a child's safety, they always had a weakness.
But to his surprise, Danielle remained completely unfazed.
"Mike, did you honestly think I'd come alone? Did you really believe your little tricks could fool Alexander?"
The moment the words left her mouth, countless blinding floodlights illuminated the perimeter of the factory, forcing Mike and the two burly men behind him to shield their eyes.
A second later, the synchronized sound of heavy boots echoed as dozens of men in black security uniforms swarmed from every corner, surrounding the trio. The police followed closely behind, handcuffs drawn and expressions grim.
Mike whipped his head toward Danielle. "You played me?"
"The feeling is mutual," Danielle replied coolly. She tapped the micro-earpiece hidden in her collar. "Alex, everyone's in position. Let's wrap this up."
"Are you hurt?" Alex asked.
"I'm fine. Everything went smoothly," she replied with a faint smile.
Before she even finished speaking, a familiar figure strode out from the blinding lights. Alex pushed his way through the crowd and walked straight to Danielle.
He pulled her into his arms, his gaze scanning her from head to toe. Only when he confirmed she was completely unharmed did he finally exhale a heavy breath.
Alex turned his dark, menacing gaze toward Mike.
Mike took a slow step back, keeping his eyes on Danielle. "You've really disappointed me."
A sudden wave of unease washed over her.
The moment those words left his lips—
A deafening roar erupted from the sky above them.
The noise grew closer and more intense, violently rattling the air above the abandoned building materials factory.
The helicopter banked sharply.
Only when the chopper was completely out of sight did Danielle slowly pull away from Alex's chest.
She took a deep breath. The cool night air rushed into her lungs, clearing the chaotic fog in her mind.
She rubbed her temples, feeling the frantic pulsing beneath her skin. The sudden turn of events had caught everyone off guard.
But Mike's parting words and that helicopter appearing out of nowhere felt incredibly eerie.
This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment escape; it was meticulously planned.
Mike had agreed to this meeting knowing full well that Alex would set a trap. He only showed up because he had a guaranteed way out.
In fact, this entire encounter had just been a test—a test of their security measures and a probe into their limits.
"Track him," Alex ordered, pulling out his phone and dialing a number. "Get on the line with Air Traffic Control and border security immediately. Trace that helicopter's flight path. I don't care which direction it went or if it flies all the way out of Ashford—intercept it."
