But she had no idea that behind that closed door, Gian hadn't taken a single step.

He leaned back against the cold corridor wall, rubbing his exhausted temples. An unlit cigarette rested between his fingers.

The hospital had strict non-smoking policies, and more importantly, he refused to let the smell of smoke seep into her room.

He stood there like a stone statue, his gaze locked onto her door.

Nurses and doctors hurried past, their hushed conversations blending into the background noise, but Gian didn't blink.

His entire universe was reduced to that door and the woman resting safely behind it.

Knowing she was okay made the grueling wait entirely worth it.

Pulling out his phone, he texted his assistant to handle all corporate matters for the day and ordered him not to call.

Then, he texted Danielle Crawford, letting her know Kirsten was awake and safe.

Slipping his phone on silent, he returned it to his pocket and resumed his vigil against the wall.

He stood there from dawn until dusk.

The fluorescent lights flickered on in the hallway as night fell.

A nurse pushed a food cart out of Kirsten’s room and noticed him still standing there. "Mr. Atwood, have you been out here this whole time?"

"Ms. Delaney is awake and her vitals are stable. If you’re tired, you can go inside and sit, or head to the waiting lounge."

Gian shook his head, his voice raspy. "No, I’m fine right here. I don't want to intrude."

"If she needs anything, please let me know immediately."

Moved by his unwavering devotion, the nurse smiled softly and walked away.
