Kirsten arched an eyebrow, a playful smile on her lips. “Afraid I might misunderstand and think you actually like me? Getting the unpleasantries out of the way first?”
She knew how much of a gentleman Gian was, but she couldn’t resist teasing him.
Gian smiled back at her. “Are you trying to misunderstand me on purpose?”
He paused, adding, “I can’t tarnish your reputation without doing my part.”
“Giving you the respect and status you deserve is the least I can do.”
He was fully aware that this arrangement was temporary, but Kirsten’s reputation was real.
If they were going to put on a show, he couldn’t let her be wronged. That was his bottom line and his responsibility as a friend.
Kirsten dropped her playful expression and nodded seriously. “Fine, I agree.”
She had always known Gian had a strong sense of propriety. The standards he mentioned would undoubtedly be thorough and appropriate, never putting her in an awkward position.
After a moment, she asked with a grin, “So, I can call on you for anything from now on, right? Anything a fiancé is expected to do, you’ll do?”
Things like handling family dinners, fending off unwanted blind dates, or even just being there to listen.
Gian met her gaze. “The title isn’t just for show.”
“I will fulfill the duties of this role to the best of my ability.”
“And if I fall short in any way, don’t hesitate to tell me.”
He had always been a man of his word, someone who took responsibility for his actions.
Kirsten couldn’t help but laugh.
They had known each other for so many years, from school to their careers, and they understood each other inside and out.
There was none of the awkwardness of strangers, no need for tentative probing. Once the terms were laid out, everything fell into place smoothly.
“Then I’ll tell my family tomorrow.”
She slapped the desk decisively. “We’ll go back together, meet the parents, and make this act completely convincing.”
Gian replied, “I’ll follow your lead. You set the time, and I’ll be there.”
Kirsten nodded.
