Brian’s eyes lit up instantly. “Really?”

He thought, ‘ I just knew it. It’s all that guy’s one–sided wishful thinking. Jessi must have only taken the invitation because he’d pestered her into it. the so what? In the end, she still didn’t agree to be his date!‘

The more Brian thought about it, the happier he got, a smile tugging at his lips.

Jessica glanced over, finding the sight too much to bear. She turned her head to focus on driving, ignoring him.

Brian didn’t mind. He was still caught up in the joy of Jessica refusing to be Wesley’s date.

“Jessi, since you’re not going as his date, why go at all? Anniversary galas are all the same anyway, boring,” Brian said, determined to keep them apart

“I already said I would. And besides, he never asked me to be his date,” Jessica couldn’t help defending Wesley.

She thought, ‘Wesley has a girlfriend for goodness‘ sake. Why would he ask me to be his date?”

Brian said nothing, but his expression clearly showed he didn’t believe that.

Jessica rolled her eyes, thinking, ‘I’m telling the truth, so why wouldn’t he listen?‘

Finally, she got tired of it, deciding to drop the subject and let him think what he wanted.

Brian noticed the change in her expression. His lips moved slightly, but he held back from voicing his doubts.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Jessica. He just had a habit of staying wary of any man getting close to her.

But right now, Jessica obviously didn’t want to hear it. He shouldn’t ruin the mood.

Thinking that, Brian glanced at the invitation Jessica had set aside, picked up his phone, and texted Jackson, asking Jackson to get an invitation for him.

Later, at the Finch Group anniversary gala, Jessica, dressed in a gold,threaded evening gown with a subtle makeup look, had just met up with Wesley when she heard gasps from behind.

She turned instinctively. When she saw Brian, in a custom suit with a diamond watch, arriving alone, she wasn’t the least bit surprised.

“Looks like Mr. Atkinson really values me,” Wesley teased beside her.

“Dr. Finch, please don’t tease me,” Jessica sighed.

Brian’s behavior was making it hard for her to hold her head up in front of Wesley. ‘Couldn’t he at least think about me when he’s acting crazy?‘ she thought.

“Alright, enough joking. Let’s get serious.” Wesley suddenly turned earnest.

The shift was so quick that Jessica barely registered it.

“Serious about what?” she asked automatically, just as Wesley pointed toward the main table.

He said, “That’s my dad. With Brian’s standing in business, my dad’ll probably drag me over to meet him soon. So there’s no hiding who I am.

Jessica paused, still trying to see how this involved her, when Brian walked over.

“Jessi.” Brian’s deep voice was soft and warm. The other executives and their wives who knew him all looked over, curious to catch a glimpse of the

Jessica and Wesley instantly became the center of attention, and she felt drained.

“What do you want?” she asked, her face blank, annoyance clear in her eyes.

Brian looked deflated. He glanced wordlessly at Wesley beside her and said, a little sheepish, “Nothing.”

Jessica was tempted to snap, “Then go away,” but held back to avoid drawing more notice.

Brian took the chance to stay by her side, subtly moving to separate her from Wesley.

Wesley went along with it, stepping aside to put space between himself and Jessica.

Jessica felt even more guilty when she saw that.

Brian noticed and mentally called Wesley a schemer.

“Tired? Let me help you over to rest. I saw some good desserts over there. You want any?” Brian fussed.

“No, I don’t. Don’t you have your own stuff to do?” Jessica brushed him off.

“I do,” Brian said while thinking, ‘But none of it matters as much as you.’

He’d already messed up by putting work before Jessica once. He wasn’t doing it again.

Jessica was about to tell him to leave when Fred Finch whom she’d met once at a business event strode over and greeted Brian. “Brian, why didn’t you let me know you were coming? I’d have sent my good–for–nothing son to pick you up.”

“Mr. Finch, you’re too kind. I…” Brian was about to exchange some pleasantries with Fred when Fred’s big hand landed heavily on Wesley’s shoulder. Brian’s expression shifted in an instant.

Fred didn’t pick up on Brian’s odd mood and kept on at Wesley. “Brat, can’t even greet Mr. Atkinson? You never come home or mind the company–just fool around with that psychology clinic of yours.

“What’s the point? I’m telling you, you should really learn from Mr. Atkinson, so I don’t need to worry about your future.”

Fred truly felt both love and irritation for Wesley. He’d only ever had this one son, and the family business was all going to go to Wesley.

But Wesley had taken a liking to psychology since college. He’d forced a switch of majors and then gone abroad for years.

Finally, he came back, but he refused to join the company, choosing instead to run a little, no–name clinic on his own.

Compared to Brian, who’d joined the company right after graduation and could handle things independently years ago, it was enough to make Fred mad.

“Mr. Finch, he’s your son?” Brian managed to ask, his voice tight.

Brian stared hard at Wesley, who was patiently reasoning with Fred, feeling like some long–held idea had been shattered.

“Yeah, my only son, Wesley. He was studying psychology abroad, came back, and opened his own clinic. He won’t touch the company stuff, so most people in the business circle don’t know him,” Fred sighed.

Fred finally noticed Brian’s strange look, glanced between Brian and Wesley, and ventured. “Mr. Atkinson, that look on your face–you’ve met this brat before?”

As he spoke, he clapped Wesley’s shoulder hard again, thinking, ‘You idiot, look what you’ve done!‘

Wesley just felt annoyed, thinking, ‘What have I even done?‘

But to avoid getting hit again, Wesley stepped forward, held out his hand to Brian, and said, “Mr. Atkinson, hello. Let me reintroduce myself. I’m Wesley My dad runs Finch Group, and I’m a psychologist. Nice to meet you properly.”

Brian’s mouth twitched hard. “Hello,” he said, his tone as stiff as could be.

If Brian still couldn’t see he’d been wrong, he’d have wasted all these years of his life.

“About earlier…” Brian frowned, starting to apologize but not sure how to say it.

After all, there were so many business peers and younger people around. Admitting he’d been treating Wesley like some imaginary rival and picking on him in front of everyone? That would be really embarrassing.
