Chapter 342
The colorful lights from the night market cast shadows across the man’s face, making his expression hard to read.
Jessica watched him turn off the engine and park the car. When he turned around to look at her, she thought to herself, ‘Here we go!
She hesitated for a few seconds, then decided to take charge of the conversation first. “You-”
Brian cut him off, “Jessica, are you hungry? Is there anything you want to eat?”
Jessica’s eyes widened slightly, and the words just came out. “That’s really what you want to ask me?”
‘He’s not going to ask me why I went out, or who I was meeting with?‘ she thought.
Brian turned his head away, avoiding her gaze. “Yeah.”
He stared out at the bustling night market, but his mind kept replaying what he’d seen outside the coffee shop earlier. Of course he wasn’t that understanding about it, but Jessica’s mood was clearly off tonight, and he didn’t want to make things worse for her.
Brian’s response left Jessica completely stunned.
“Want to try some tacos? I remember there’s a place here that makes pretty good ones,” Brian asked.
Jessica was so lost in thought that she didn’t really process what Brian had said. She just automatically responded, “Okay.”
After Brian got out of the car, she watched his figure weaving through the crowded street. That was when it finally hit her. ‘How does Brian know there’s a good taco place around here?‘ she thought.
Jessica’s mind flashed back to the taco she’d received in her mailbox earlier. The answer was right there.
This kind of thoughtfulness would move anyone. But she used to be just like this, too.
Brian had only kept it up for two months, while she’d done it daily for ten years.
The memory of those ten years she’d given Brian everything hit her, and suddenly she felt nothing. No warmth, no gratitude.
Brian had brought all of this on himself.
If only he hadn’t been so biased toward Madeline back then. If only he’d protected his heart. Even if he’d fallen out of love with her, she wouldn’t have left
-not for Jacob’s sake.
Thinking of Jacob reminded her why she’d rushed out tonight in the first place.
“What are you thinking about?” Brian asked.
“Whether I should say yes to Jacob.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. She immediately stiffened, shooting Brian a cold look. “Are you trying to get information out of me?”
Brian sighed. “No, I’m just worried about you.” He held out the fresh taco he’d just bought. “Are you cold? Eat something warm.”
The temperature had dropped over the past few days. The nights were getting chilly.
Jessica took the taco and fell silent for a few seconds before eating it. She had the babies to think about now–she couldn’t let anything happen to
herself.
Brian watched her eat and felt instant relief. As long as she was willing to eat, that’s what mattered. He’d been worried she might hurt herself just to spite
him.
Chapter 342
“If Jake’s situation is making things difficult for you, I can talk to him about backing off,” Brian said as he pulled back onto the road, even incurred
Jessica’s hand froze mid–bite. “Don’t.” The quiet response came from the back seat, and Brian felt his shoulders relax.
“Whatever you want. As long as you’re okay, Jessi. Don’t push yourself too hard,” Brian said gently.
Jessica didn’t say any other words. She kept eating the taco, but her eyes burned with unshed tears. She fought to keep them from falling again.
Through the rearview mirror, Brian watched her small frame trembling slightly in the back seat. His heart twisted painfully at the sight.
They drove the rest of the way home in silence.
