Jacob felt no disappointment at her words–if anything, he seemed thrilled.

“That’s great, Mom! Take your time thinking it over. I’m not in any rush–you can take as long as you need, I’m always free!” he said eagerly.

Jessica hadn’t said no. That was all that mattered to Jacob.

His pure joy only made Jessica’s feelings more complicated. She stayed quiet momentarily before saying, “I’ll give you an answer soon.* “Then I’ll head home and wait for your response!” Jacob’s happiness didn’t fade one bit. Even his steps were light as he left.

“Jacob hasn’t been this happy in a long time,” Brian said suddenly, coming out after finishing the dishes.

The word “strangers” hit Brian like a punch to the chest. But he didn’t argue with Jessica. He just nodded and left as she wanted.
