Jacob shook his head wildly. “N–nothing. Mom, can I come in? I need to talk to you.”

He still had sense enough to hide certain things, not wanting to be shut out.

Looking at Jacob’s pleading face, Jessica hesitated but let him in.

“Thank you, Mom!” Jacob nearly jumped for joy.

Jessica felt her mood lift slightly at the sight.

Jacob dashed inside, then spun around abruptly.

“Did you forget something?” Jessica asked.

He shook his head, trotted back to the door, and leaned against the frame. “Mom, go first. I’ll close the door.” He even shuffled aside to make way.

Jessica suddenly recalled Stella saying Jacob had matured. He indeed seemed much more well–behaved now.

She didn’t refuse, turning to the living room first.

Jacob closed the door softly, careful not to make noise. By the time he reached the sofa, Jéssica had poured him milk. “Thanks, Mom!”

He instinctively sat beside her and took a sip. The familiar taste made his eyes widen–this was the milk Jessica used to order for him at home.

He said, “Mom, you remember I like-”

Jessica cut him off, cold–faced. “Your dad brought this. I poured it for you because I don’t like it.”

She turned her head to avoid his gaze. She’d only realized it was that milk after pouring, unable to recall when she’d bought it, yet still poured it on

instinct.

The moment Jacob raised the cup, she regretted it. But seeing him recognize the milk moved her–he’d remembered her efforts all along.

Jacob looked at her cold profile, tempted to say Brian never bought this brand as Jacob was the only one who liked it in the family, but this time he stayed smart.

“Thanks for the yummy milk, Mom. Next time I’ll bring you something good,” he said natively.

Jacob nodded obediently, pulling a stack of money from his schoolbag and handing it to her. “Mom, I want to pay you to make a summer plan like before. Please?”

He placed the money on the table and clasped his hands in prayer.

Jéssica’s hand clenched. Jacob had hated her plans before–she didn’t know what he was up to.

He said, “Mom, please! I’ll give you all my allowance. If that’s not enough, I’ll borrow from Dad. Please say yes!”

Jacob’s pleading pulled Jessica from her thoughts. She studied him in silence before asking, “It’s just a summer plan. Why not make it yourself or ask your dad? He won’t charge you.”

“Dad’s plans aren’t for me, and he says mine have no logic. Yours are the best. Please, Mom–treat it like a part–time job? I promise not to bother you outside the plan.”

Jessica had no reply. Refusing now seemed heartless. It was just a plan–easy for her, no reason to upset a child over it.

“Fine, I’ll do it,” she said softly.

“Yay! Thank you, Mom!” Jacob cheered, nearly leaping into her arms before stopping himself.

“S–sorry, Mom! I got too excited, didn’t mean to-” He stood up, quickly placing the breakfast they’d bought on the table.

“This is for you, Mom. Dad’s waiting downstairs. I’ll visit again. Bye!” He dashed off, fearing Jessica’s anger.

He’d almost crossed the line again. Jessica hated being touched, but he kept forgetting. Jacob was so frustrated he nearly cried.

Jessica watched her son hurry off, gently closing the door, then looked at the money. She felt sad that they had grown so distant that he thought he needed to pay her for help.

Nightmare flashed in her mind, making it hard to breathe. She trembled as she took out her oxygen tank, but just then, her phone rang.
