After getting home, she devoted herself to studying cooking every day so that Brian and Jacob could eat better. In the beginning, she would bring homemade meals to Brian at his office every single day.
Sometimes, when he had to attend a dinner banquet and she arrived late, he would already be in the car.
Worried he might not eat well, she would rush over and knock urgently on the car window, pleading, “At least take the dinner I made for you.”
But every time, Brian would just give her a cold, indifferent glance and tell the driver to drive.
Once, she happened to catch Brian driving himself, with Madeline in the passenger seat.
Hearing her voice, Madeline rolled down the window and gave her an “apologetic” look.
“Sorry, Jessi, we’re rushing to a banquet and running out of time, so we can’t stop by. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure Mr. Atkinson eats your dinner,” Madeline said sweetly.
“No need to explain so much to her. She’s the one who lost all sense of time staying home all day–who else is there to blame? It’s windy, close the window,” Brian cut in coldly, his voice full of disdain.
Madeline obediently rolled the window back up. Through the glass, her eyes met Jessi’s, filled with barely concealed triumph.
Jessica was utterly devastated, standing dazed for a moment.
Her grip loosened. The thermos container clattered to the ground, its carefully prepared contents splattering everywhere.
When she finally came to her senses and knelt to clean up the mess, tears were already streaming down her face.
Brian accused her of having no sense of time, yet she had arrived half an hour early just so he could have a homemade meal the moment he got off work.
But in the end, it was all somehow her fault.
“I don’t need it. Stop bringing me meals from now on. I’m not so desperate that I can’t afford to feed myself.”
Jessica finally rolled down the window, but her words drained the color from Brian’s face.
“Jessi, why would you say that? We used to-”
Jessica turned away, avoiding his gaze, and said coldly, “That was just me being soft–hearted, giving you the illusion we could still be together. But don’t come looking for me again, ever.”
She told herself she couldn’t let herself rely on Brian any longer.
With that, Jessica rolled up the window, stepped on the gas, and drove off resolutely.
Brian was left standing alone, wondering where he had gone wrong to upset Jessica again.
Even before Jessica stepped through the front door, she could hear laughter coming from the living room.
“Mom!”

“That’s right, mom. Don’t be angry. If you don’t want to see me, I’ll go now,” Jacob said obediently, hoisting his little backpack and scurrying toward the
door.
“Wait…”
Stella reached out to call Jacob back, but Jessica stopped her.
“Let him be.”
As she spoke, her eyes fell on the snacks on the table.
She used to make these exact treats for Jacob with my own hands, but he wouldn’t even taste them, always saying they weren’t as good as Madeline’s.
Now it was the other way around, but what did it matter?
Suddenly, Jessica felt all enthusiasm drain away. She just couldn’t bring herself to care anymore.
“You and Dad can share these. If they’re not to your taste, just toss them. And from now on, refuse any future deliveries for me.”
With that, Jessica turned and went straight upstairs.
