"Alright, I thought you two might get back together."
"He said he never goes back to his exes," Katrina smiled self-deprecatingly. "Besides, I was the one who broke it off."
Ivy nodded. "Yeah, I heard from Jamison that he’s never gotten back together with an ex."
The words twisted the knife in Katrina's heart.
"Then who are you marrying?"
"The son of an old friend of my mom's. He immigrated to Australia years ago and came back specifically to settle down. My mom thinks it's a reliable match since our families know each other well."
Ivy looked utterly bewildered. "An expat? Are you moving to Australia after the wedding?"
"Probably not." Facing her best friend, Katrina didn't hide the truth. "This marriage is just a temporary fix. After my mom passes, I’ll find a way to get a divorce."
"If that's the case, why not just talk to Willa? Tell her to stop pushing you." Ivy ached for her friend, terrified she’d get duped by a man and find herself trapped in an impossible divorce.
"I tried. It’s useless." Katrina took a slow breath and let it out heavily. "Her own marriage was a disaster, and she’s been depressed for years. She’s only grown more stubborn. Now that she's terminally ill and doesn't have much time left, she's beyond anxious. She just wants to see me married, thinking it’ll make my life complete. She’s convinced the son-in-law she picked is solid and that I'll be safe with him. What else can I say? Pushing it will only make her furious."
Ivy didn’t know how to comfort her, so she just stepped closer and patted her arm. "That's so hard on you."
They had always shared the bond of tough lives.
But right now, it seemed Katrina had it much worse.
At least Ivy had managed to turn her life around through marriage and reached the top.
Meanwhile, Katrina was likely about to hit rock bottom because of hers. She might even be jumping straight into the abyss.
That night, Ivy told her husband everything.
"Can you talk to Naylor?" Ivy asked softly, watching Jamison rub stretch mark oil on her belly.
Jamison sighed. "You think I haven't tried? He's too angry to listen to reason right now."
"So we just watch them fall apart? Katrina is literally about to get married. I refuse to believe he doesn't care at all," Ivy said, her tone laced with frustration as she worried for her friend.
Hating to see his pregnant wife stress over this, Jamison gave in. "I'll ask him again tomorrow. I'll drop the news and see if it gets a reaction out of him."
"Yeah, just try. I can tell Katrina is still in love with Naylor. She looks completely exhausted."
The next day, Jamison called his buddy and cut straight to the chase. "Katrina is getting married. Do with that what you will."
