Tatiana had refused to believe that anything fatal had happened to her son, but the sheer terror and uncertainty had consumed her. To protect his assets, she had immediately used her connections to finalize the divorce decree. She was determined to ensure that Felicia would not see a single cent of Max's wealth. Miranda only found out about this maneuver after the fact, but since the deed was already done, she saw no reason to intervene.
Felicia suddenly let out a low, mocking laugh. "And so? What exactly are you trying to say?"
Miranda narrowed her eyes, her breathing growing heavy with indignation.
"In the eyes of the Hawthorne family, profit truly supersedes everything else," Felicia continued, her tone laced with icy contempt. "Max meets with a tragic accident, and your only grief stems from losing a pawn who brings you immense wealth."
"Ms. Ross!" the butler snapped sharply from his post by the door. "Please mind your manners."
Felicia arched a brow coolly. "Is speaking the truth considered bad manners now?"
The butler opened his mouth to retort, but Miranda raised a hand to silence him. He clamped his jaw shut and stepped back.
Miranda maintained her dignified posture, though a sharp edge of anger now tainted her gaze. "So, you are protesting on Max's behalf? I would very much like to know what your true feelings for him actually are."
"You flatter me, Madam," Felicia replied smoothly. "Max does not need me to fight his battles. And whatever feelings I may have for him are entirely irrelevant now. I do not want a single cent of his money. As long as everything he has goes to Anne, that is enough for me. If he truly never returns, I will fight with everything I have to gain full custody of my daughter."
Miranda's expression remained perfectly unreadable. "I had originally intended to offer you some compensation, but it seems there is no need for that anymore."
"I appreciate the thought, but I do not need your charity," Felicia countered.
Miranda shot a look at the butler, who immediately stepped forward. "Ms. Ross, please leave," he ordered, his tone uncompromisingly stern. He used to think Felicia was a sensible woman who knew her place. Now, he saw her as a scheming opportunist who dared to utter such nqwty words in the family's manor. She had not shown a shred of genuine grief since Mr. Hawthorne's accident. In his eyes, she was entirely unworthy of being part of the Hawthorne family.
Without another word, Felicia stood up and walked out of the room.
The moment the door clicked shut behind her, Miranda clutched her chest and dissolved into a violent fit of coughing.
