Jeffrey noticed them approaching. Luke stopped squarely in front of him, his stance radiating confrontation. "Mr. Manning, could we have a word in private?"

Jeffrey's gaze swept briefly over Max before settling on Luke. He did not refuse. "Fine."

The two men exited the banquet hall. Max followed them out but leaned against the wall a fair distance away, tucking his hands into his pockets. From where he stood, their conversation was completely inaudible.

"What exactly did you say to Willa?" Luke demanded the moment they were alone.

Jeffrey observed him with a calm, unreadable expression. "Luke, the two of you were never meant to cross paths. You have far better prospects awaiting you. You and Willa simply are not a match."

"So you are refusing to answer my question," Luke stated bitterly.

"Regardless of what I said to her, there is no future between the two of you," Jeffrey replied flatly.

Luke's fingers curled into tight fists, his eyes darkening with anger. "What is she to you, anyway?" he challenged sharply. "Is she just some pet you keep caged up?"

Faced with the harsh accusation, Jeffrey remained entirely impassive, his eyes devoid of any emotion. "Luke, stop clinging to this foolish delusion."

"You are the one who is delusional," Luke spat back.

Jeffrey offered no further response. He simply stepped past Luke and walked down the corridor. As he passed Max, he kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, not breaking his stride for a second.

"You really are a psychopath," Max remarked casually as the man walked by.

Jeffrey shot him a fleeting, icy glance but remained silent, disappearing down the hall.

Max withdrew his gaze and walked over to where Luke was standing frozen in place. Seeing his cousin's dark, stormy expression, he sighed. "Trying to reason with him and demanding her back is a lost cause. Talking to him is useless."

Even without knowing exactly what had been said, Max knew that since Jeffrey had successfully dragged Willa back, he would never grant her freedom easily.

Luke's brows were knotted tightly together. "My biggest fear right now is that he will use the same psychological tactics on Willa that were used on Felicia."
