The Shadow Alpha novel Chapter 22

It’s been two days since Justin was attacked, things have somewhat calmed down. I receive a letter every day, we’ve been trying our best to catch whoever is leaving them, but they’re extremely evasive, much to my chagrin.

I was so lost in thought I almost forgot that I was meant to be showering; I just got back from my border patrol shift and was freshening up before getting some shut eye. I shut off the water and stepped out of the shower; only half paying attention to what I was doing. The stress and exhaustion seemed to weigh my body down, I was out cold the moment my head hit the pillow.

I shot up in bed when Jake’s voice rang in my head.

‘Alpha, we got them!’

I scrambled out of bed and grabbed a thin hoodie that was hanging over the chair before darting out of the pack house. Just as I got to the front of the pack house, I noticed both packs gathered around staring at the forest line, waiting for Jake and the rest to emerge from it. I guess word got out pretty fast.

I stepped up next to Devin who stood at the front of the crowd with his eyes narrowed and fists clenched at his sides, he looked primal.

Minutes later a commotion was heard as a few pack warriors dragged six rogues with them, last to emerge was Jake and Dristan with their hands around a large guy who I guessed was their leader. Low growls were heard around me when they dragged him to the front to stand before me.

I felt annoyance and triumph bubble within me; these people gave me a serious run around.

The packs circled around them; I shot Hunter a look telling him to hold Devin back and stepped forward facing the leader. His head was down with his long ash blond hair fanned out; the smell of rogue was quite overpowering, my face twisted in disgust.

I came to a halt about two meters away from him and waited to come face to face with the reason for my lack of sleep these past few days.

His head lifted and I froze.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!”

“Hello Love.” his awfully sexy British accent broke through my thoughts as he smiled mischievously at me.

A growl rose in Devin’s chest and he was about to charge forward when Hunter grabbed a hold of his arms to hold him back, my eyes narrowed into slits.

“You stink.” I said feeling annoyed at myself for not having figured it out.

“You never seemed to mind before.” He smirked at my comment.

“You can let him go, he’s not going anywhere.” I sighed knowing that he was here for a reason.

“You know him?!” Devin exclaimed and surged forward escaping Hunter's hold and charged at Oliver, but before he could pass me I stopped him by placing my hand on his chest. The action took him off guard and caused him to stumble to a stop.

“Don’t!” I said sending him a warning look, I stepped forward.

“Allie I have never questioned your decisions before no matter how reckless they may be but, this time you’re taking it too far. You’re already withholding so much information from us, I refuse to let this add to it!” my eyes softened at the worry in his voice. He knew how I got when things became too much and he hated it, which is why he always forced me to share the burden.

“Guys I know you’re worried and pretty angry at me but, I’m asking you to trust me. I promise to tell you everything as soon as I get out of there, okay? Please?” they all shared a look and one by one their shoulders sagged.

“Fine, but we’re going to be directly outside this door and we want a full explanation the moment you exit that room, understood?” Devin said seriously which shocked everyone given by the looks on their faces. I knew it took a lot for him to allow that, not only did he hate Oliver for attacking his ‘friend’, but he hated the fact that Oliver and I knew each other.

I could see the struggle and anger in his eye, but it meant a lot to me that he trusted me enough to not push the subject- I wasn’t sure why I felt that way after everything. Then again he probably saw this as an opportunity to get me to tell him what was going on knowing full well I wouldn’t tell him otherwise.

I entered the interrogation room and locked the door behind me, the moment I turned around I was engulfed in a hug which made me chuckle, but I hugged him back with just as much ferociousness.

After we broke from the hug we both settled on the concrete floor against the wall, “Can they all be trusted?” I didn’t need to specify who; Oliver already knew that I was talking about the other rogues that were with him.

“Yeah, they can.” I asked no further questions, in the little time that I had spent with him I knew that he was not a man to trust easily and once he did, he was loyal to you no matter the cost.

“What are you doing in America?” he chuckled lightly and shook his head.

“This really is an interrogation, isn’t it?” he said with a teasing smile which I stuck my tongue out at, we sat in silence for the next few seconds before his voice broke through it.
