The Night I Let Go novel Chapter 17

In the city center, in a spacious three-bedroom suite…

This was Zachary and Wendy's marital home, where they had lived together for five years. But now, in the bedroom of their marriage, Wendy was venting her fury by smashing everything she could find.

"Zachary, you bastard! How could you cheat on me?" Wendy cried, her eyes reddening as tears streamed uncontrollably down her cheeks. She muttered to herself repeatedly while throwing things around in a fit of rage.

Her heart was filled with resentment for Zachary, yet she couldn't deny her lingering love for him. After five years together, she wasn't heartless. How could she not have feelings for Zachary?

When he had proposed divorce, it had felt like a knife to her heart. Still, she firmly believed that without her, Zachary would be miserable.

After all, the money he had given her as a wedding gift had gone to her parents. Without money, without her to shield him from the storms of life, Zachary's days would be tough. She was sure of it.

Thus, she was convinced that Zachary would come to regret his decision and that he would apologize and soften, ultimately returning to her side.

But she never expected that not only would Zachary not back down, but he would also be fooling around with her former best friend.

The more she thought about it, the more painful it became. Wendy quickly changed her clothes and rushed out the door.

After leaving home, she first drove to the place where Ellen used to live. As a former best friend, she definitely knew Ellen's address.

However, to her disappointment, Ellen had sold her old house, and Wendy had no idea where she currently resided.

After spending an hour contacting nearly all of their college classmates, she finally discovered Ellen's new address.

As she drove toward Ellen's home, a sudden thunderclap echoed across the sky, and in the next moment, a torrential downpour began.

On this rain-soaked night, Wendy drove with a heavy heart. The thought of Zachary now in bed with Ellen suffocated her.

Her car sped up, and within ten minutes, she arrived at Ellen's neighborhood.

A few minutes later, she stood drenched at Ellen's front door. The urgent doorbell rang repeatedly.

Ellen, who had already fallen asleep, was jolted awake. Rubbing her sleepy eyes and adjusting her half-open clothes, she climbed out of bed.

As she walked out of her room and opened the door, she was visibly taken aback to see Wendy standing there.

After a moment of stunned silence, Ellen smirked and asked, "You came here quickly, didn't you?"

At that moment, Wendy's eyes were red and filled with rage, resembling a furious lion.

She delivered a heavy slap across Ellen's face, her eyes brimming with hatred. "Ellen, Zachary is my husband! How could you do something so low and shameless?"

Ellen was taken aback by the sudden slap. She covered her face, and it took her a moment to regain her composure. Then, her expression darkened, and she lunged at Wendy.

Ellen shot back, her voice laced with sarcasm. "What about your husband? You clearly don't love him, do you? If you don't love him, why are you forcing him to stay by your side?"

Ellen's words sent Wendy spiraling back to five years ago.

Five years prior, Ethan had left her to study abroad. Unable to bear the pain of heartbreak, she sat on the roadside crying, and that was when she met Zachary. After that, Zachary began to pursue her.

At first, she had no intention of agreeing to be his girlfriend, but with encouragement from her friends, she was told that the quickest way to move on from one relationship was to dive into another.

So, Wendy accepted Zachary's advances, and she remembered how ecstatic he was when she agreed, like a child receiving candy.

Zachary chuckled, though his smile was tinged with a hint of heartbreak and self-mockery. He said, "Wendy, it's over between us. If you're unwilling to divorce me, that's fine. I've already filed for a unilateral divorce. Now, please leave and don't disturb us!"

Hearing this, Ellen felt a rush of triumph. She turned to Wendy and exclaimed, "Did you hear that? Zac said to leave us alone! You should hurry up and go!"

Wendy's face drained of color, and she felt as though she might shatter. Her eyes were red as she stubbornly stared at Zachary and asked, "Zachary, are you really with her?"

"What does it matter to you?" Zachary replied coldly.

He had thought that even if Wendy's heart had changed, she had once loved him. But the truth was that she had never been with him because of love. It was absurd. He had been a substitute for Ethan for five years.

No wonder Wendy had been so reluctant to come home after Ethan returned, unwilling to spend time with him. He was the one who had been the shameful third wheel all along.

Ethan had once said over the phone that the one who wasn't loved was the third party. Back then, Zachary had vehemently refuted that claim. Now, looking back, it seemed incredibly funny!

As he observed Zachary's indifferent demeanor, Wendy felt a swell of injustice.

But seeing Ellen's smug and mocking expression only fueled her anger. She bit her lip and her tone suddenly became forceful.

"Zachary, is this your way of getting back at me?"

Zachary remained silent, offering no response or explanation. Did it even matter to explain this situation?

Upon seeing Zachary's silence, Wendy gritted her teeth and hissed, "Zachary, I will make you regret this! I swear!"

With that, she turned on her heel and stormed out, leaving them behind.
