He waited, patient and silent, for his prey to show up.
They had stumbled across a page from an old file left by Mrs. W. On it was a picture of a carnelian bracelet. It seemed important, maybe even connected to the antidote they were after. They pulled every string, chased every lead, and finally tracked down an identical bracelet on the black market.
But after all that effort, it turned out to be nothing special. Just a cheap, ordinary bracelet, not worth a second glance. Still, someone else must have believed in its value. The buyer had paid a fortune for it, probably following the same clues they were chasing. Aloys couldn’t help but doubt if the other side had the guts to show up at the casino.
His thoughts were interrupted when Anthony’s face suddenly popped up on the security monitors.
“Aloys, he’s here,” one of his men reported, clearly surprised. “He only brought one person, cleared security, and he’s not carrying anything dangerous.”
Aloys leaned in, his sharp eyes narrowing with suspicion.
Showing up at The Gilded Wheel again with no backup? Was Anthony hiding something? Did he have a trick up his sleeve, or was he just that sure he could leave the casino unharmed like last time?
“Is the girl with him?” Aloys asked, squinting at the screen as he studied Anthony’s every move.
No matter how deep they dug, they couldn’t find any real information about this guy. Twice he’d slipped right through their fingers. The more mysterious he seemed, the more cautious Aloys became.
“No, she’s not here,” his subordinate replied quietly.
Aloys had used the bracelet as bait, hoping to catch the girl with the genetic mutation. But she hadn’t shown.
He let out a cold, dismissive laugh. “It’s fine. There’s clearly something going on between him and that girl. If we keep him, she’ll show herself sooner or later.”
