The casino was packed with every kind of game you could imagine, all of it gleaming and high-tech. Charlotte took a slow look around, her eyes stopping on an arcade game set up in the corner.
This wasn't the kind of machine you found in a kids’ playroom. Here, each token was worth twenty thousand dollars. The screen flashed with different prize amounts, and once you dropped in a token, a pointer started spinning across the numbers. To win, you had to use both hands, fingers flying over the keys to push tiny boxes into place on the screen. The faster you finished, the more money you could win. But if time ran out, you lost the whole token.
It seemed simple, but the game demanded quick fingers and razor-sharp focus. One round could mean winning or losing more than a million dollars. The money came fast, but it could disappear just as quickly. No wonder most people gave the machine a wide berth.
Charlotte smirked, her voice lazy. “I want to play that one.” Fewer people meant less noise, and maybe she could build up some cash.
“Go get tokens.”
Adonis handed over two hundred thousand and brought back ten tokens. Charlotte took one for herself, passing the rest to Anthony. She led the way, Anthony following behind with the tokens, reminding Hans and the others to keep an eye out.
“Yes, Anthony,” Hans replied, wiping sweat from his brow. He was so tense it looked like he might snap. Jackson and Adonis were on edge too.
Aloys probably never imagined the person he was hunting would stroll right into his own casino.
While the guys watched the room, Charlotte breezed through her first round. The machine spat out a stream of tokens—twenty in all, racking up four hundred thousand dollars. She handed the winnings to Anthony and started another round. Her fingers flew over the keys and, in less than fifteen seconds, she cleared the screen. More tokens poured out. This time, she’d won a million.
Over a million in less than five minutes.
Now she was hooked, every bit of her attention locked on the game. Anthony smiled and had Hans bring over a box for the tokens. He sat next to her, watching her play, his gaze soft and full of warmth.
