“Are you sure you want to make the patient their target?”
“I already told you. Just answer yes or no,” Charlotte replied, her patience wearing thin. “The rest isn’t your problem.”
“There are more challengers besides the guy on stage. Beat them all and I’ll give you what you want.”
“Fine.”
Charlotte stood up, ready to leave.
“You’re not worried I’ll back out?” Aloys called after her.
Charlotte’s lips curled in a mocking smile. “If you do, I’ll set your Gilded Wheel on fire.”
Turn it into a city of ashes.
Aloys didn’t say another word.

Back at the ring, Charlotte’s symptoms showed up right as she adjusted her dagger. She frowned, forcing herself to focus.
In the half hour she’d been away, her opponent had recovered and was ready for her. The moment he saw Charlotte, he bristled, glaring like he wanted to tear her apart. “I slipped up earlier. That won’t happen again. Be careful, little girl.”
“Is that so?”
Charlotte did up her buckle, smoothed her hair, and gave him a calm smile. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
He didn’t waste any time. He lunged for her, aiming a vicious blow straight for her neck, hoping to end it in one move.
Charlotte just smiled, dodged to the side, and brought the flat of her blade down hard on his shoulder. The force nearly knocked him off his feet, but he managed to grab her hand as he stumbled.
He didn’t get to enjoy that small victory. Charlotte slipped forward, hooked his leg with hers, yanked his belt, and threw him to the floor.
She leaned in, pinning his neck with her elbow, her blade hovering at his throat. “What kind of scar do you want?”
He fought with everything he had but couldn’t break free from her grip. When her words sank in, he went completely pale and passed out cold.
“Next.”
Charlotte let him go, rubbing her wrist, her voice icy.
The crowd was stunned. She’d had every chance to kill him but didn’t?
The next challenger stepped up, but he was even weaker. Charlotte had him on the floor in three moves, tops.
In under ten minutes, she took down five men who’d all come at her like wild animals.
One left. If she won, The Gilded Wheel would keep its place.
