“Wow, you really are committed.”
Charlotte’s lips curled into a playful smile. She spoke like it was nothing. “I’ll double your salary.”
Double the salary?
The guard’s head shot up. His eyes lit up, and suddenly, all his aches and pains vanished. He stood straighter, looking like he could take on the world.
“I’ll serve you loyally, Charlotte, always!”
Charlotte just laughed and strolled back to her seat, sinking into it with a relaxed sigh.
“Charlotte, I don’t think we can keep this from Anthony,” Jackson said as he poured a glass of warm water. He gently set it by her hand and spoke softly, almost in a whisper.
“I know. I never planned to hide it from him.”
She rolled up her sleeves and rested her pale arm on the table, absentmindedly toying with her glass. “If I had to guess, he’s already on a flight to the Isle of Veil.”
“Wait, you mean Anthony knows about the gene mutation?” Adonis blurted out, totally thrown. They’d worked so hard to keep it under wraps.
If Anthony already knew, why all the secrets? Why come to Solenia first and then head to the Isle of Veil?
Charlotte just gave a small, scratchy laugh. “Yeah. The place we’re heading after we land is way too risky. He’d never let me go if he knew.”
“So where are we going?” Adonis asked, still lost. They all knew Charlotte was taking them to the Isle of Veil, but she hadn’t shared the specifics.
“The Gilded Wheel.”
She took a sip of water, then nudged the glass aside, her tone suddenly serious.
The Gilded Wheel?
