Shirley took a deep breath and listed off every book she’d read, one after another. Fifteen titles in total. Every single one was basically required reading for physics majors, and a few were so advanced that most students wouldn’t see them until grad school, maybe even during their PhD.
“I also watched a bunch of experiment videos,” Shirley added quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. She spoke carefully, almost like she was afraid she’d forget a detail and someone would catch her in a lie. “I pulled everything together and used it to solve those questions.”
The room went silent for a moment. The physics students just stared at her, stunned.
It was one thing to get through that many books. But to actually understand and use material meant for PhD candidates? That was something else.
“Beck’s a grad student, right? He’s probably read all the same books as Shirley. If that’s true, then how come Shirley got a perfect score and he didn’t…” Someone trailed off, not bothering to finish the sentence. Everyone knew what was left unsaid.
“Wait, you mean she figured all this out on her own? That’s incredible.”
“Of course she’s amazing. She’s friends with Charlotte. There’s no way she’d be ordinary.”
“Seriously, does anyone else wonder what Charlotte’s brain is even made of?”
With everyone whispering and gossiping, Mr. Lane finally managed to compose himself and made his way to the front of the room.
“There is absolutely no way the exam questions were leaked,” he said, his tone steady. “If anyone still has doubts, you’re welcome to report it to the university and ask for an official investigation.”
He paused, looking around the room. “I swear on my entire career, Shirley’s score is real. Anyone who wants to keep an eye on me is more than welcome.”
Swearing on his career… That was a huge deal. Mr. Lane had been at Cabinda University for years, and he’d taught some of their best students. He was known for being honest and fair. There was no way he’d risk everything he’d built for just one student.
