What?
Did Charlotte just say she’s Dr. Cole?
That sentence hit the room like a grenade. Some people just sat there in shock, some looked confused, but most couldn’t hold back their laughter or sarcasm.
Dr. Cole? Seriously? Either their ears were playing tricks on them, or Charlotte had completely lost the plot.
She was only nineteen, barely a college freshman. Sure, she’d always been a medical prodigy. But physics? Come on. Aside from that perfect score on the entrance exam, had anyone heard of any other achievements? She’d never even placed in a physics competition. And let’s be honest, Charlotte wasn’t the only one who’d aced the physics exam. If getting a perfect score made you Dr. Cole, then half the top students could claim the same thing.
It was ridiculous. The kind of joke people would remember for years. Even if she wanted to help clear Shirley’s name, did she really think everyone else was that gullible?
Mr. Lane stared at Charlotte, completely stunned, struggling to process what she’d just said. He finally found his voice, lips trembling. “Charlotte, what did you just say?”
She said she was Dr. Cole.
He’d met her when she was seventeen, back in Lamplighter Village. She always had a knack for physics. Under his “guidance,” she’d only gotten better. Her physics grades were top notch, but Dr. Cole? That was on a whole different level.
Dr. Cole was the mentor he respected most. So much of his own research had come from her advice over the years. There was just no way Charlotte could be Dr. Cole.
He took a shaky breath, brow furrowed, clearly struggling to accept it.
He wasn’t the only one. Olivia looked just as shocked. She knew Charlotte was a genius in medicine, and she’d heard her play music like a pro… but Dr. Cole? That was new. If Charlotte really had that kind of identity, why would she keep it hidden?
Impossible. She had to be making it up.
“Charlotte, you’re not just messing around, right?” Andrew edged up to her, his voice barely above a whisper. The mood in the room was tense.
Charlotte as Dr. Cole? It sounded like something out of a fairy tale.
