The second round of the competition was about to start.
The Physics Society's test was way harder than your average physics contest. Cabinda University’s physics department had gathered past champions from all over the country. After round after round of tough selection, only ten students made it to the final showdown. These were the department’s brightest stars. Except for Shirley, everyone else on stage was either a master’s student or even higher.
They had just one hour. The whole room was silent.
Shirley took her test paper, flipped through it carefully, checked that everything was in order, then started writing, completely focused.
Next to her, Beck glanced over without thinking. He noticed Shirley was writing nonstop, not even pausing to think. His brows knitted together. The questions were brutal. How did Shirley have the answers? Could Olivia have been right all along... Was this whole competition just a way for Mr. Lane to smooth Shirley’s path into the Physics Society?
The idea made Beck grip his pen so tightly his knuckles went white and his face lost all its color.
Down in the audience, Charlotte lounged against the wall, half paying attention, half scrolling through her phone as she texted. Andrew and the others were glued to the big screen, anxious. When Shirley stopped writing for a moment, Andrew practically jumped out of his seat.
“Charlotte, Shirley stopped again, did she get stuck?”
It was a fair question. Shirley was just a freshman. How could she possibly keep up with grad students? Honestly, making it onto that stage was already amazing.
Charlotte, busy texting, kicked Andrew lightly. “Andrew, yell one more time and you’re out.”
Andrew shrank back, seeing how dark her expression was. She was in a terrible mood today. Maybe she and Anthony had fought.
A message popped up on Charlotte’s phone.
Newell: Why are you messaging me out of the blue?
Charlotte: I need to ask you something.
