Dr. David didn’t say anything.
Nora’s real condition was probably a lot worse than the test results showed. With so many symptoms hitting her all at once and no obvious cause, he had even started to wonder if it was something as serious as a genetic mutation. Charlotte was way too smart not to have considered that possibility herself.
“It’s probably best to be extra careful,” he said quietly after a few seconds, his voice low. Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, “You’re not just living for yourself anymore.”
The words hit Charlotte hard. She used to be on her own. But now… she had her parents, the Gates family, and Anthony.
She finished her milk, tossed the empty bottle in the trash, and her face was impossible to read.
Seeing her like that, Dr. David actually felt a little relieved. Maybe, now that she had people she cared about, Lottie would start looking after herself more.
“Should we keep this from Anthony?” Dr. David asked softly as he followed her.
Charlotte slowed down, glanced back at him, and gave a small smile. “Do you really think I could, even if I tried?”
Dr. David had no answer for that.
When they came out, Anthony was still sitting in the lobby, same as before. He looked perfectly composed. With his sharp features and the way he carried himself, he could make any place feel like his own kingdom.
Of course, that would be more convincing if he didn’t look so stormy.
As soon as Anthony heard them, he looked up. The second he saw Charlotte, the icy look in his eyes faded. He got up right away and walked straight to her side.
“All done?” he asked.
“Yeah.” Charlotte leaned into him, letting him hold her. Then she glanced at Dr. David and spoke softly. “We still don’t know what’s causing my mom’s illness. I need you to really focus on this for a while.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve got it covered.” Franco’s wife was Nine’s biological mother, and with Franco dropping thirty billion into the institute, there was no way he’d slack off. He was ready to put everything he had into the research.
