Charlotte lay quietly on the big bed, dressed in fresh pajamas, her eyes closed. Her face was pale, almost ghostly, and she looked so fragile it hurt to see her like this.
The doctor finished his exam and glanced around the room at the tense, worried faces. He spoke up, his voice a little shaky. “Charlotte fainted because she’s exhausted and her blood sugar dropped too low.”
“When will she wake up?” someone asked immediately.
Lavinia had just started to move toward the bed, worry etched all over her face. But Anthony was quicker. He reached Charlotte first, pulled up a chair, and gently took her hand, silent but steady, his eyes never leaving her.
The doctor went on, “She hasn’t had proper rest lately. And she just finished a twenty-hour surgery. That takes a lot out of anyone. Once she’s had enough rest, she’ll wake up on her own.”
“That’s good to hear,” Lavinia breathed out, finally letting herself relax a little. She looked back at Samantha, standing just behind her, and said politely, “Samantha, Anthony’s here with Lottie. Why don’t we go sit in the living room for a while?”
Samantha hesitated, then glanced at Anthony and Charlotte. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “Okay, let’s go.”
With Anthony watching over Lottie, there was nothing to worry about.
“Right this way,” Lavinia said.
The two women strolled side by side down the hallway, chatting as they went.
Lavinia grinned. “Anthony really is lucky to have Lottie, isn’t he?”
Samantha’s smile grew warmer. “He is. But Lottie’s lucky too. They just fit, you know?”
“Absolutely. Can you imagine their kids? Smart, gorgeous, probably unstoppable.”
The thought made Samantha’s heart twist. If Nora were still here, she would be so relieved to see Lottie so cherished and protected.
