A gentle warmth spread through the room, making Charlotte lose her train of thought. She turned just enough to glance up at Anthony, chin tilted in that stubborn, beautiful way of hers. Her eyes narrowed a little. “What are you doing here?”
The staff had actually given them separate rooms.
Anthony just grinned, his voice low and a little rough. “I’m here to behave myself. Thought I’d offer myself up for a hug.”
He nudged the door closed with his foot, then wrapped his hands around her waist and lifted her up onto the desk. Now she had the height advantage, looking down at him for once.
Charlotte hooked her arms lightly around his shoulders. Her lashes lowered, and a tiny smile curled her lips. “Sneaking into my room? That’s gutsy. Aren’t you worried my dad will catch you and kick you out?”
Anthony just laughed, catching one of her hands and brushing a kiss across her knuckles. “Mr. Hawk knows.”
She looked at him, surprised. “He does?”
Anthony leaned in, dropping a kiss at the corner of her mouth. “If he really wanted to keep us apart, do you think he’d put our rooms this close together? And there’s no maid or bodyguard at the door. This place is new to you, and he knows you probably wouldn’t sleep well alone. So tonight, I’m staying.”
He said it right against her ear, voice deep and gentle. The heat of his breath made her skin tingle. The meaning behind his words was more than clear.
Charlotte tried not to smile, but failed. She ran her fingers through his thick hair, soft and boyish for a second. “Alright. You’re allowed.”
All the discomfort of being somewhere unfamiliar faded away. She’d had such a long day, her mind was barely keeping up. But now, with Anthony beside her, she finally let herself relax. The tiredness caught up to her, all at once.
“I’m so sleepy,” she mumbled, letting her cheek rest against his chest. Then she remembered, “But I haven’t showered yet.”
Anthony’s throat bobbed as he swallowed, his voice coming out a little rough. “So… want me to help you?”
