“Alright, got it.”
Charlotte pulled out her phone and opened the Family Group Chat.
Jackson: Charlotte, the lead you gave us was spot on. The person who bought Covid-X more than ten years ago was definitely Franco.
His wife had some kind of neurological disease. She’d only managed to stay alive all these years thanks to Covid-X.
Franco.
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed. Just as she thought.
Adonis: Things got pretty tense at the last auction. Do you really think Franco will give us the drug?
Jackson: Charlotte, what should we do now?
Charlotte: Wait for my update.
She sent her reply and left the group chat. After poking at her food and eating a few bites, she grabbed her backpack and stood up.
“Charlotte, where are you going?” Andrew mumbled, his words muffled by the bite of chicken in his mouth.
“Out.” Charlotte slid on her cap and pulled the brim down. After a few steps, she paused, looked back at Andrew and the others, and said, “If Anthony asks, just tell him I’m with you.”
“Huh?” Andrew was confused, but he nodded anyway. “Okay.”
Between Anthony and Charlotte, he’d rather not cross Charlotte.
...
At the research institute on the edge of the city, Charlotte passed through the security checkpoint with a retinal scan.
“Charlotte.” The assistant at the door greeted her with respect.
Charlotte handed over her backpack, slipped on a white lab coat, and walked straight into the core lab.
“Lottie, now that you know Franco has the Covid-X, what’s your plan?” Dr. David asked quietly. “Everyone knows how much Franco loves his wife. That drug is the only thing keeping her alive. He’s not just going to hand it over.”
Charlotte closed the file and leaned back in her chair, her eyes cool but a little playful. “If he cares that much about his wife, then I’ll use her life to get the original Covid-X formula.”
“Get me the complete records as soon as you can. What I have now isn’t enough.”
Dr. David stared at her, worry in his eyes. “Lottie, is it really worth the risk? You could expose yourself, get in trouble... all for one formula?”
Charlotte was quiet for a moment, then smiled, her voice steady. “It’s worth it.”
Dr. David fell silent. Once Charlotte made up her mind, nothing could change it.
“When are you leaving for Solenia?” he asked.
“In a day or two. The sooner I get that formula, the sooner my grandma will be safe.”
