Anthony stood at the entrance, his back to Charlotte, phone pressed to his ear.
“You didn’t find him?” His voice was sharp, frustration clear.
“No, Anthony,” Hans replied, all respect. “The cameras went out. We couldn’t see who the guy was.”
A guy?
Charlotte walked up just in time to catch that. She frowned, curiosity piqued.
“That’s it for now.”
Anthony noticed her, his expression tightening. He ended the call, crossed over, and took her hand.
“Ready to head back?”
“Mhm.” Charlotte tilted her head, nestling against Anthony’s shoulder, her cheek brushing him. “Who were you looking for?”
“Someone’s taken a liking to my Lottie,” he said, his hand gentle in her hair. “But he slipped away before I could catch him.”
She just smiled, not really bothered. “Guess he got lucky.”
“Yeah, this time. If I see him again, I might break his legs.” Anthony pressed a kiss to her forehead, holding her close. “Let’s get you back to the hotel. You need some rest.”
…
With Newell’s tip, the N Organization intel team traced the person who’d bought the reagent years ago to Solenia. Still, finding out exactly who it was would take a little more time.
At the hotel, Charlotte settled in front of her laptop, eyes glued to the latest data from the lab. The odds looked good for making an inhibitor with what she had. But the final step? That would have to be her.
“Have the N Organization people keep looking,” Charlotte murmured, her head resting on the desk, eyes tired. “But we need to get back to Cabinda.”
Her grandma couldn’t wait any longer.
“Okay.” Anthony stroked her cheek, his voice gentle. “Don’t worry. We’ll find your mom’s bracelet.”
Mom?
Charlotte looked at him, her mouth curving in a sad little smile. Her voice was barely there. “Then… thank you. From my mom, too.”
…
That evening at the airport, Charlotte had just boarded the plane when her phone rang. It was Sunlight. He probably thought she’d changed her mind and would finally say yes to his invitation. But her answer hadn’t changed at all.
