The next morning
After breakfast, Anthony slipped a coat over Charlotte’s shoulders and took her hand, which was a little cold. They got into the car together.
As soon as they settled in, Jackson’s voice came through the speaker.
“Charlotte, Newell just sent word. They found out the Covid-X compound was originally bought by someone from Solenia.”
“Solenia?” Charlotte was curled up against Anthony, and she opened her eyes a bit wider.
That formula had taken decades to develop. It was meant for neurological diseases and cost a fortune. The only people who could afford it were usually pharmaceutical companies or big research institutes. But even after all these years, it had never shown up on the market. That was the weird part.
“That’s right,” Jackson said.
“So we’re on the right track.” Charlotte smiled, the corners of her lips lifting just a little. “Have Newell and the N Organization’s intel team keep digging.”
There was so much about Solenia that still needed answers. The A1 Research Institute, her mom’s death, and her dad, who might still be out there, or maybe he was gone forever. Every lead was old and hard to chase down.
“Understood.”
With that, Jackson started the engine and pulled away, heading for the conference center.
Inside the car, Anthony rested his chin on Charlotte’s shoulder, his eyes dropping to her face. He hesitated for a second. “Your mentor…”
“Yeah?” Charlotte looked up at him and blinked. “What about my mentor?”
“Nothing.” Anthony remembered their last conversation. She’d said her mentor was just an old man. His nerves settled a bit. He kissed the corner of her mouth and spoke in a low, rough voice. “If you have time, let me meet him too.”
Anthony’s smile froze.
Charlotte moved in close and kissed his cheek, looking up at him with a mischievous grin. “Good luck, Anthony.”
…
Half an hour later, they arrived at the academic exchange center.
All the other universities at the medical conference were world-famous for their modern medicine programs. Nobody could figure out why the organizers let Kingswood University in.
Once they got out of the car, Anthony glanced at Hans and spoke quietly. “Wait out here.”
Lottie was just here to have a little fun. Nothing would happen.
