“What did you just say?”
“The forensic report is ready. The police will take over from here. If you have any questions, talk to our lawyer.” As soon as Stella mentioned pressing charges, Mahoney’s face tightened. He stepped forward, wanting to get to the bottom of it.
He barely took two steps before Roger stood up from his chair. He was tall, his presence immediately blocking Mahoney’s path. His eyes were cold, sweeping right over him.
“As for you…” Roger’s gaze shifted to Dewitt, who was trembling in his seat. “Go to the station and explain everything. Then submit a written review to the forensic office and cooperate with their investigation.”
“Yes, sir.” Dewitt nodded like crazy. He finally let out a long breath, just relieved he hadn’t actually gotten mixed up in Letty’s case.
If he had, Letty’s family wouldn’t be the only ones needing a lawyer right now.
“Thank you for your help.” Roger gave the nearby officers a polite nod. “Call me if you need anything.”
“Thank you for coming down,” one of the officers replied, friendly but professional. “We’ll get to the bottom of this. No innocent person will be wronged, and no guilty person will walk away.”
When he said “guilty person,” he shot a sharp look at Letty, still lying on the hospital bed. He then gave his orders. “Get a few people in here to guard Letty. Everyone else involved, bring them in for questioning.”
He was talking about Fedelia and Mahoney.
“Understood.”
A few officers walked straight over to Fedelia and Mahoney. Their faces were serious. “Please come with us.”
“Don’t touch me! What right do you have to arrest me?” Fedelia fought back, cursing under her breath, but the next second, an officer had her arms pinned behind her. She was bent over, looking completely humiliated.
“You…” Fedelia was so angry, she could barely breathe, unable to spit out a full sentence.
“If you have anything else to say, call my lawyer,” Stella said, forcing herself to stay composed. She turned to Charlotte, giving her a small, tired smile. “Charlotte, let’s go.”
Maybe it was nerves or maybe she’d just been standing too long, but Stella’s legs suddenly gave out as she turned away.
Charlotte reached out to help, but someone else was faster.
Roger caught Stella by the waist, steadying her, his eyes full of concern as he looked down at her. Seeing that, Charlotte quietly sat back down.
Well, this just got interesting.
