But Janie wasn’t about to back down. There were still two rounds left. Anything could happen. She told herself it wasn’t over until the last bell. What she didn’t expect was how much worse things would get.

The fourth and fifth rounds were brutal. Janie stopped caring about the rules. Every move she made went straight for Charlotte’s weak spots. When she tried to swipe at Charlotte’s face, Charlotte caught her wrist and, instead of letting go, twisted it hard and forced it down.

Janie collapsed on the mat, clutching her wrist, pain written all over her face. It really felt like her hand might be broken.

“Charlotte, you did that on purpose! You’re supposed to stop before hurting someone in kickboxing!”

Janie’s face was pale as she fired back. “You grabbed my wrist. You already won, but you still twisted until my hand almost broke. You broke the rules. You should be disqualified.”

It stung. She was a kickboxing champion, and now she’d lost to someone no one had ever heard of. The crowd was already snickering. How could she just accept this?

Charlotte clapped her hands and looked down at her, all innocent. “Come on, you can’t just make up stories because you don’t want to lose.”

There were medics waiting outside the training area. When they heard the noise, one rushed in with a first-aid kit.

Janie stood up, holding her wrist, and tried to walk over to the medic. Her legs felt numb and she accidentally bumped into Charlotte.

Charlotte just smiled, and when she brushed past Janie, her fingers touched Janie’s wrist for a split second.

There was a soft click. Suddenly, the pain faded away.
