As they chatted, everyone's eyes drifted to Janie, who was practicing her punches. Her movements were smooth and every punch landed with force. No wonder she had so many championships under her belt.

Then their attention shifted to the girls from the Traditional Medicine program. Without even thinking, everyone looked at Charlotte. Among all the girls, she was pretty much the only one who had the kind of fitness you could count on. Even so, seeing her now, it was hard to imagine how she’d hold up if Janie decided to go after her. If Janie wanted payback, Charlotte was in trouble.

Cotton sized up Charlotte, too. Her moves were... well, there wasn’t really a good way to describe them. He just shook his head, walked over, and tried to give her some advice.

“Just try your best. Stay out of the way. Don’t let her get a good shot at you.”

Charlotte glanced at him, her eyes cool and calm. “Who says she’s the one doing the hitting?”

Cotton blinked, a little thrown off. “Team Four picked Janie. You do know she’s a sparring champion, right?”

“I know,” Charlotte said, her lips twitching into a slight, almost careless smile. “She’s exactly the one I want to beat.”

Cotton was speechless. He tried again. “Yesterday’s obstacle course was mostly luck, but today’s sparring... this is the real deal.”

He rubbed his forehead. Why was she always so cocky? That attitude of hers never changed.

Charlotte just looked up, her face giving nothing away. “It’s not a big deal.”

There it was again. He remembered the last time she’d said that. She ended up winning first place. Now Cotton was starting to get a bit nervous. Did she actually know how to fight? She sure didn’t look like it.

Not far away, the Modern Medicine students who were helping Janie practice started making fun of them.

“Janie, just use your feet. We need to protect our hands for when we’re holding scalpels in the future.”

“Yeah, not like those Traditional Medicine students. They don’t need their hands for anything important. All they do is pick herbs, right?”

No matter how high Charlotte scored on her entrance exams, she still picked what they considered a useless major.
