The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1808

“The antidote Lottie took before wasn’t completely useless. It just didn’t work as well because she’s pregnant, which messed with her body, so she’s having a harder time bouncing back.”

“But if the lab at Isle of Veil comes up with a new antidote, she’ll be fine.”

“That’s it?” Anthony asked, crossing his legs. Even in his lounge clothes, he couldn’t hide his natural confidence. It just radiated from him.

“If that’s really it, why would she need to keep it from me?” His fingers tapped against the table, his voice suddenly sharper and colder. “She’s playing with fire. And you’re all just letting her?”

Dr. David frowned, looking troubled.

“This fever wasn’t from her sleep disorder. That means it’s the gene mutation, right?” Anthony stared at Dr. David, running out of patience. “Dr. David. Spell it out.”

“There are risks,” Dr. David admitted, sighing. “She can’t take any medicine because of the pregnancy. Her body’s under a huge strain.”

“Like what?”

“High fevers. Full-body convulsions. Dizzy spells. Worst case… she could have a heart attack.” Or something even worse.

Anthony’s face darkened at those words. Dr. David stopped before listing the rest.

Anthony sat back on the sofa, tension simmering around him, cold and heavy. It was a long moment before he finally spoke, his voice rough and low.

“How do I guarantee she stays completely safe?”

Dr. David hesitated, staring at the floor. “Either Isle of Veil develops a pregnancy-safe antidote, or…” He couldn’t bring himself to finish. The babies were three months along. Twins… Just the thought of losing them was unthinkable. Anyone could see how much Lottie already cared about her two little ones.

“Anthony, it’s only a small risk. Lottie’s a doctor herself. She’d never put her life on the line like that,” Dr. David offered gently, trying to calm him down.

Anthony’s eyes narrowed.

Charlotte had always been treated at the research center. It made sense Hans would ask.

“No.” Anthony’s gaze dropped to Charlotte’s stomach, his face clouded with emotion. “Book the finest private hospital. Tell them to be ready for… an abortion procedure.”

Abortion?

Hans nearly bit his tongue. He had to wonder if he was hearing things wrong.

Anthony actually said he wanted Charlotte to… have an abortion.

When the call ended, Anthony hung up. His hand lingered over Charlotte’s stomach, eyes stinging with unshed tears.

It isn’t that I don’t want you, little ones. It’s just… your mom means everything.
