“And you know Anthony dotes on Charlotte. I really don’t think it’ll happen.”
“But honestly, with how gorgeous those two are, their baby would be ridiculously cute.”
“Don’t even think about it. That’s not happening for at least three years.”
“Uh, yeah…”
Charlotte let out a laugh that sounded more awkward than amused. Her lips curled up just a little as she said, “Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the blessings.”
Three years? She had a feeling her own kid might already be running wild by then.
After saying hello, Charlotte went with Glenn into the library. She handed over the report she’d brought.
“This…” Glenn’s face changed as he read through the document. He pushed his glasses up, looking more serious by the second. “This isn’t some regular fever or random fainting spell.”
The worst part? It could actually spread from person to person. That was the truly scary thing.
“The cause is unidentifiable from these results.” Glenn paused and suddenly looked straight at her. His voice was quiet. “Did the International Medical Alliance ask you for help?”
Charlotte gave a short nod. “They’ve been investigating for half a month now. Not only couldn’t they control the outbreak—it’s actually getting worse.”
Even towns nearby were beginning to suffer.
If they couldn’t stop it in time, it wouldn’t just be Apex in danger. The whole world might be in trouble.
“Did the International Medical Alliance send people there?”
“No results.” Charlotte leaned back in her seat, hands stuffed in her pockets, her face all hidden except for a hint of pretty cheekbone below her cap. “That’s why they found their way to me.”
“So…” Glenn looked like he was testing the waters. “You want to go to Apex?”
That place was right at the heart of the outbreak. People with sense would never go near it.
Charlotte sat at her desk, tapping away on her laptop.
Fifteen minutes earlier, she’d gotten the official invitation: come to Apex, investigate the strange epidemic herself.
If it were before, she wouldn’t have hesitated. She’d have said yes in a heartbeat.
But now…
Charlotte frowned and looked down at her stomach—and she couldn’t help but think of Anthony too, finally her legitimate husband. The thought made her restless.
“Would Daddy even let us go?” She leaned back in her chair, poking her belly absently. “Or maybe we could just sneak off ourselves…”
Her stomach gave a little jolt, and she stopped mid-sentence.
You two little troublemakers, she thought.
