Right now, there seemed to be only one way out. If that man never talked, her secret would stay safe.
But the hospital was packed with cops. There was no way she could pull anything off, not with everyone watching. Was she just supposed to sit here, waiting for everything to fall apart? No way. She couldn’t go down for this. If she did... everything would be ruined.
With her heart racing, Dorothy snatched up her purse and rushed downstairs. She was almost at the door when it swung open right in front of her.
Daniel stood there, a storm of cold fury practically crackling around him. Behind him, police officers in uniform filed in, along with the rest of the Blair family.
Dorothy froze. Her face lost all color, and her hands wouldn’t stop shaking. She forced out a shaky, “Daniel, what’s going on?”
He didn’t even blink. “Why don’t you tell us?”
Daniel stepped closer, stopping just in front of her. His eyes were pitch-black and locked on hers, heavy with pain and disappointment. “You can say it, or I can.”
Patricia, Matthew, Lavinia, Charlotte, and Anthony moved off to the side. They sat down together, every single one of them watching her with serious faces.
“I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Dorothy backed up till she hit the wall, forcing herself to sound calm. “Why is everyone looking at me like that?”
“The police found your number on the suspect’s phone.”
Daniel’s voice was low, rough as gravel. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. “Are you really still going to lie to me?”
Dorothy opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She just stood there, stuck.
"The police wouldn’t come here without evidence, Dorothy.” Daniel’s voice was tight with pain. “The assailant woke up. He told them everything.”
Dorothy’s knees nearly gave out. Her face turned white as a sheet. “He woke up?”
The officer stepped forward, treating Dorothy politely, but his tone was all business. “The suspect said you ordered the hit.”
“That’s not true!”
Dorothy completely lost it. “I just wanted him to scare Shirley, make her leave Andrew. I never told him to kill anyone!”
