Kenneth’s face shifted in an instant. His eyes went cold as he glared at her, sending a chill straight through Emily. She hurried to speak. “Let’s go over our lines, okay?”
Before he could respond, she popped a piece of cake into her mouth, acting like nothing was wrong.
With her cheeks puffed out, she looked just like a little dumpling, and Kenneth felt his anger melt away. He opened the script, and they started rehearsing.
It wasn’t long before Emily finished her cake and slouched into the sofa, fighting to keep her eyes open. Sleep was pulling her under.
Kenneth didn’t say anything. He just rested his chin on his hand, watching her with a look that was half smirk, half something softer.
After half a minute, Emily’s head lolled to the side. She was going to topple over, so Kenneth reached out, steadying her. He gently eased her head onto a pillow.
She fell asleep immediately. Her eyelids stayed shut, lips a soft rose, long lashes curling over her cheeks and fluttering with every breath.
Quietly, Kenneth picked up a thin blanket and tucked it around her. He sat there beside her, eyes locked on her sleeping face.
The longer he watched, the harder it got to keep his feelings in check. His heart just wouldn’t calm down.
He even caught himself missing yesterday’s awkward, accidental moment between them.
Looking at Emily, fast asleep, a faint smile played on Kenneth’s lips. He whispered, “I think I’m really starting to like you.”
He’d always believed he’d never fall for anyone. Yet here he was, getting snagged by Emily of all people.
“What’s so special about the guy you have in your heart? Is he really worth your tears?” His smile faded. For once, he looked completely serious, voice low and a little rough. “Stop liking him. Like me instead.”
At least he’d never make her cry that way.
Unaware of any of this, Emily slept peacefully.
Seeing Jarrod at her side made something in Kenneth churn. His fists clenched as he spoke, voice icy. “Why is he always hanging around her? And why did Emily let him in her car? She knew I was still here… Why didn’t she wait? Does she even care about me? Or does Jarrod just know what to say, how to make her smile?”
Didn’t she notice how hard he’d been trying lately?
“Kenneth, don’t get worked up.” The agent tried to calm him down, dabbing at his forehead. “There’s a big event the night after tomorrow.”
“Emily and Jarrod are both attending as representatives for the show. They probably left together to talk about that.”
“What event?” Kenneth’s voice was tense as he watched their car disappear.
“The award gala you turned down last month…”
“Tell them I’m coming.” Kenneth’s words were clipped, eyes focused and intense. “And make sure I’m seated right next to her.”
