Charlotte turned around and caught Newell watching her. His eyes looked so lost, almost defeated, and he didn’t even try to hide it.
Before she could figure out what that look meant, the door flew open and Adonis rushed in, out of breath.
“Charlotte!”
“What’s going on?” Charlotte turned her head, lips parting as she frowned.
“There’s a fight in the conference room.”
Anthony was about to ask more, but Charlotte had already pushed herself up from his arms. Her face was set and cold as she headed for the door.
She was still pregnant, and she’d just had a scare. She really shouldn't be pushing herself like this.
Newell frowned and was about to say something, but Anthony was already striding after her. He caught up and reached for her shoulder.
“Wait.”
“Anthony, are you trying to stop me?”
Charlotte stopped, all her frustration and anger simmering just beneath the surface. Her eyes were clear and bright, but there was a fierce glint in them.
“No.” Anthony shook his head. He took the jacket draped over his arm and slipped it gently onto her shoulders. Then he took her hand, his voice soft. “It’s a little cold. Wear this before we go.”
He just wanted to be with her, not stand in her way.
Charlotte stood close, breathing in Anthony’s warm, comforting scent. Her heart softened, and a small smile tugged at her lips.
“Let’s go.”
Anthony gave her hand a gentle squeeze, leading her toward the conference room.
Back in the lounge, Newell stood there, his feelings a tangled mess. He’d really thought Anthony would try to stop Charlotte for her own good, just like he would have. But clearly, he was wrong.
Maybe this was why Anthony could reach Charlotte’s heart. He just loved her, no matter what.
The hallway outside the conference room was tense. Jackson and Adonis had their men blocking every entrance.
The air felt heavy, like everyone was holding their breath.
“Lottie, why are you here?” Nora rushed over as soon as she saw Charlotte, her eyes darting to Charlotte’s belly. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Charlotte answered quietly.
“That’s a relief.” Nora let out a breath, tension easing a little.
It wasn’t just the baby they worried about. Charlotte’s body was different, her genetic mutation still a mystery. If anything happened, it could hurt her too.
“So, what’s the fight about?” Charlotte leaned gently against Anthony, her voice cool and calm. “Let’s hear it.”
Franco and Nora exchanged a glance, but before they could answer, Charlotte’s eyes landed on a document lying on the table.
The Hawk Family: Order Number One.
She took one look at the contents, and a single thought flashed through her mind. Has Allanson completely lost it?
