“So you’re planning to control us with Marcia?” Rena asked, trying to sound tough, but Charlotte’s gaze made her scalp prickle.

“At least you’re not completely clueless,” Charlotte replied. As soon as she finished, Adonis hit play on a video they’d prepared.

On the screen, Marcia appeared, tied up and looking completely defeated.

“It really is Marcia…” Rena blurted out, her voice shaking. The room fell into a heavy, awkward silence.

At first, it had seemed obvious that the two big families were in charge and couldn’t possibly lose. But somehow, Charlotte had flipped the script and was now running the whole show like it was nothing.

Aloys stared at the video, his fingers curling into a tight fist. His voice came out low and tense. “Is she okay?”

Charlotte brushed her hair back, her face totally unreadable. “She’s alive, for now.”

Aloys didn’t say a word. If it had been Rena who got captured, he probably wouldn’t have cared this much. But Marcia… she was different. In the whole Hawk family, besides Charlotte, only Marcia understood genetic mutation. If he wanted his research to continue, Marcia had to stay safe.

The two families just looked at each other, nobody daring to make a move.
