Cabinda.
A row of sports cars gleamed at the entrance to The Gates Estate. Servants bustled around, loading luggage into the trunks, moving with quiet efficiency.
Nora clung to Franco as if she could draw comfort from his arms, her hand still holding tightly to Robert’s. She managed a smile, but deep down, she didn't want to let go. She knew, unless something miraculous happened, this might be the last time she saw her father.
“Nora, can’t you stay a few more days?” Robert’s voice trembled, his eyes swimming with tears.
“We’ll come back as soon as we finish things in Solenia,” Nora said softly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “Promise me you’ll take care of yourself, okay?”
Thinking of Nora’s return eased Robert’s heart a little. He talked with her a bit longer, then pulled Franco aside. From his pocket, he pulled out a gold bank card and tried to hand it over.
Franco saw the card and instinctively pulled his hand away. He knew exactly what kind of money was on that card.
“Dad, you—” Franco hesitated, glancing at Robert in confusion.
“Take it,” Robert insisted, face serious as he shoved the card into Franco’s hand. “If you ever need money, you come to me.”
Charlotte stood aside, speechless. This was a serious misunderstanding. Her dad was loaded.
“Dad, I…”
“I said take it.” Robert glared at Franco, his tone leaving no room for argument. “What, you think you’re too good for my help?”
“No, not at all.” Franco quickly tucked the card away and gave Robert a respectful bow. “Thank you, Dad.”
He was definitely getting better at calling him that. Each time, the word sounded a little sweeter.
“Alright, that’s enough. It’s time to go.”
Franco wrapped an arm around Nora and helped her into the car. Robert turned away, unable to watch them leave. If they stayed any longer, he knew he wouldn’t be able to let go.
“Nora!” Samantha hurried over, pushing past Kevin and grabbing Nora into a tight hug. Her eyes were red and watery.
Franco noticed and quietly got in the car, leaving the two women alone for a moment.
