In the living room, Anthony was chatting with her parents and Robert. Laughter filled the air. The vibe was easy, the elders clearly doted on. When Charlotte caught sight of her mom, looking healthy and in good spirits, her eyes softened and a gentle smile appeared.

“Lottie, you slept in for once,” Robert teased, a fond lilt in his voice as he sipped his tea.

Anthony looked completely stumped, caught without a comeback.

“I’ll get you some more tea, Dad.” Franco jumped up, eager to smooth things over, and threw Anthony a pointed look.

Anthony just kept quiet.

Robert started to ask another question but paused when Charlotte walked in.

“Morning, Grandpa,” she greeted him, then made a beeline for Nora. She took her mother’s hand, pretending it was just a casual gesture, but she was really checking her pulse.

“Lottie, really, I’m fine.” Nora knew exactly what Charlotte was doing and gave her a reassuring look.

Even though Nora always had her medicine with her, she needed proper equipment to use it. Too long away from her machines wasn’t good.

“Leaving tomorrow? Isn’t that a little sudden?” Robert asked, his gaze lingering on Nora, reluctant to say goodbye.

“Franco’s got work he can’t leave right now.” Nora smiled gently, her voice calm. “We’ll come back as soon as we can.”

Franco nodded, respectful as always. “Next time we visit, Nora won’t have to leave you again.”

Nora’s smile faltered, turning a bit sad. Charlotte pressed her lips together and stayed quiet.
