"Anthony, Aloys would never just hand over the antidote," Hans said, his tone respectful.
The genetic mutation research was almost finished, but now it had hit a wall. There were only two ways forward. Either they found the right catalyst, or they tracked down someone with the mutation. Finding that catalyst was nearly impossible, like looking for a single grain of sand on a beach. They might as well give up on that. Now, people on the Isle of Veil knew there was still a real, living test subject out there. If they could get their hands on that person and study them inside and out, not only would it give their antidote work a huge boost, it might even help them figure out what caused the mutation in the first place.
And now, Aloys and his team were starting to think Charlotte might be the one they were looking for. If they learned how she was really connected to Nora, they’d definitely try to use the antidote as leverage.
Right then, Anthony heard the shower stop. His eyes turned cold. He turned away and lowered his voice. "That’s enough for now."
"Anthony..." Hans hesitated before hanging up. "Should we keep this from Charlotte?"
There was a pause on the other end. Then Anthony’s voice came through, low and rough. "No. I’ll tell her myself."
Tell her himself? If things got bad, both Charlotte and her mother were the kind of people who’d sacrifice themselves to save the other. Was Anthony really okay with Charlotte knowing the truth?
"Don’t tell Nora."
"Yes, Anthony." Hans still had questions, but he kept them to himself and hung up.
The call ended just as the bathroom door opened. Charlotte stepped out, wrapped in a white towel. Her long, wet hair clung to her pale shoulders, collarbones on full display. Her legs were slim and graceful as she padded across the soft carpet. In the warm light, her skin almost glowed, making her look even more radiant, almost impossible to look away from.
Anthony’s throat tightened as he watched her. His eyes narrowed and he walked over.
