The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1009

Her mother, the one she had never even met since the day she was born, turned out to be the legendary, mysterious researcher everyone called Mrs. W.

Nora’s thoughts were a tangled mess, her mind spinning with more questions than she could handle.

“Lottie, are you sure about this?”

She squeezed Charlotte’s hand, her voice raspy and uncertain.

“Ninety percent sure,” Charlotte replied after a pause, her eyelids fluttering a little. “Unless there are two people in the world who look exactly the same.”

Exactly the same...

Nora glanced down at the two photos in her hands. The women looked different in age and style, but the breathtaking beauty in both was unmistakable. There couldn’t possibly be another face like that in the world.

“There’s something else,” Charlotte went on. “I looked into Grandma’s cause of death. She died from total organ failure right after giving birth. It’s the same thing you’re experiencing now.”

But Grandma hadn’t been as lucky as Mom.

Her illness had come fast and hard, leaving no time for treatment. She was gone before anyone could do anything.

“If that’s true...” Nora’s voice caught in her throat, coming out small and shaky. “Grandma must have known the gene mutation was hereditary. Why didn’t she take the antidote in advance...?”

“Maybe...” Charlotte’s gaze dropped, and for a long moment she was silent. When she spoke again, her voice was low and cold. “She didn’t know about the mutation at first. She only found out after a check-up during her pregnancy.”

“Lottie, so you mean...” Nora listened, her heart pounding, her fingers digging into the sheets without her realizing. “When Grandma destroyed her research and left Isle of Veil, she never thought she’d need the antidote herself? So she didn’t bring it... or maybe she only had one dose?”

Charlotte nodded. “The antidote she left you was probably the only one she managed to save.”

Hearing all this, Nora’s eyes filled with tears, her grip on the bedclothes tightening.

“Lottie, your grandma...” She looked at Charlotte with a deep, aching sadness in her eyes, her voice trembling. “She died because she chose to leave the antidote for me.”

Charlotte didn’t respond. She didn’t need to.
