“Move!”
The doctors, all flustered, froze at the sound of that cold, commanding voice behind them. They turned as one, only to recognize her.
“Charlotte.”
Relief washed over every single face. They stopped what they were doing and respectfully stepped aside, letting her through without a word.
Charlotte walked in, calm and steady, dropped her bag on the table, unzipped it, and pulled out a small white bottle. She shook out two pills, slipped them gently into Nora’s mouth, then picked up a golden acupuncture needle. Without hesitation, she pressed the needle into Nora’s philtrum, then her temples. Her face barely changed, but for a split second, her fingers trembled. She lowered her eyes, switched the needle to her left hand, and kept going.
Anthony caught that tiny tremor. His brow furrowed but he said nothing.
When Charlotte finished, there was still nothing from Nora. The room felt frozen, heavy with silence. The only thing filling the air was the sharp smell of disinfectant, a reminder of just how close to death Nora was.
This episode had hit Nora hard and fast. No one knew if Charlotte could pull her back this time. And if she couldn’t…
The doctors glanced at Franco, who was standing on the side, hands squeezed together, eyes red and fixed on Nora. He was barely breathing.
If they lost her, no one dared to imagine what would happen.
Just as dread started to settle in, Nora coughed, hard, twice. The heart monitor’s beeping steadied, sounding almost normal again. Everyone looked at each other, barely believing it. She was alive. The tension in the room finally eased.
Franco was at her side in an instant, gently taking her hand, trying to hide the worry and sadness in his gaze. His voice was soft. “You’re okay, Nora. It’s alright.”
For more than ten years, he’d lived with the constant fear of losing her. Every time she saw him upset, Nora would blame herself. After a while, he stopped showing his worries and just made up his mind. As long as she was alive, he would care for her. If someday she couldn’t keep going… he’d be wherever she was.
Hearing his voice, Nora slowly opened her eyes and met Franco’s gaze. She turned her head just a little, and the moment she saw Charlotte, her eyes grew wide with shock and relief.
“Lottie…”
