Anthony frowned, gently took Charlotte’s hand, and unclasped her bracelet. His voice was soft as he promised, “I’ll have people keep searching.”
Just because Charlotte didn’t say anything didn’t mean she didn’t care. He knew how much it hurt to lose something her mother left behind. She just had a habit of carrying her pain alone, never letting it show.
Charlotte lifted her chin, her eyes bright and steady as she stared at Anthony. After a few quiet seconds, she suddenly grabbed his chin, leaned in, and bit his lip hard. The bite was sharp, the taste of blood spreading between their mouths.
Anthony’s eyes darkened. He pulled her onto his lap, steadying her with a hand at her neck, making it easier for her to vent. When Charlotte finally let go, she pulled back just a little, wiped the blood from his mouth with her thumb, and spoke in a low, serious tone. “The bracelet means a lot to me. But…”
Anthony’s gaze softened, his breathing uneven as he looked at her. She finished, “Your life matters to me, too.”
Charlotte leaned in, poked his chest with her finger, and said, word by word, “Whether you live or die is up to me. So stay alive, got it?”
The Isle of Veil wasn’t like anywhere else. Neither the X Organization nor the N Organization had any pull there. Too many unknowns. Too much danger. And after the fight with Aloys, going back in was just asking for trouble.
“Alright,” Anthony said, resting his chin on her shoulder. He squeezed her waist and let out a low laugh. “You really are bossy.”
Right then, Hans’s phone started ringing. He answered, listened for a moment, and his eyes went wide. He looked back at Anthony. “Anthony, our team says they never got Marcia.”
If they didn’t take Marcia, then where did that video on his phone come from?
“Looks like someone beat us to it,” Hans added.
