The Marriage She Turned into War novel Chapter 307

When I heard Abigail's words, my heart sank.

I thought she'd let go of the idea by now, especially with all the distractions, that is, the drama with Joshua and the chaos surrounding her. But clearly, I was wrong.

She hadn't given up.

I gently took her hand in mine, trying to keep my tone as soft and reasonable as possible. "Abigail, let's talk about this later, okay? I know you're serious about wanting a baby, but right now isn't the right time."

I kept my voice steady, hoping she'd listen. "We haven't exactly found stability yet. When we're in a better place—when we have the time and energy to dedicate to this—we can think about it. A child isn't a small thing; it's a life we'd be responsible for. Don't you think it's important to wait until we're truly ready?"

My words were sincere and carefully chosen. I hoped they'd get through to her.

But Abigail wasn't about to let it go so easily.

"Fine," she said, gripping my hand tighter. "Then give me a definite time. Promise me that when the time comes, we'll have a baby. Can you do that?"

I froze, unsure of how to respond.

Her persistence unsettled me. I couldn't help but think about the real reasons behind her sudden push for this.

If she truly wanted a child, why involve me? She had Joshua, didn't she? There were plenty of men lining up for her attention. Any one of them could help her fulfill this so-called goal.

A wild thought crossed my mind, one I couldn't shake. Could it be that Joshua couldn't have children?

It would explain everything—her recent change in behavior, the sudden affection, the way she was trying to pull me back in.

If that was the case, it only strengthened my resolve.

Her gaze didn't waver. "You have to trust my heart, Samuel. Don't let anyone else's words get between us. Can you promise me that?"

I was taken aback by her sudden shift in demeanor and the urgency in her voice. For the first time in what felt like forever, she seemed genuine.

I nodded slowly, still processing her words. "Okay. I'll try."

Abigail's shoulders relaxed slightly, and she smiled—a small, soft smile that felt almost out of place. "That's all I wanted to hear," she said quietly. "Thank you for trusting me, Samuel."

It was the first time in years she'd spoken to me like this, with what felt like genuine care.

But even as her words lingered, a nagging sense of unease took root in my chest.

Because if Abigail was trying this hard to convince me, it could only mean one thing—something bigger was coming, something I wouldn't see until it was too late.
