I didn't understand why Abigail was hiding this from me. She could have just told me she went to see Joshua. If she had nothing to hide, she could have said it outright. Why did she have to lie?
However, since she showed no intention of being honest with me, I didn't press the issue. I gazed at her calmly and asked in an even tone, "Did you already eat? If you have, I won't bother reheating the food. Warming it up again and again just makes it lose its original taste."
I was speaking the truth, but Abigail gently shook her head. She held my hand gently and said, "I'll eat with you."
I put the dishes back into the microwave to reheat them.
As I quietly watched Abigail's back, a strange feeling suddenly surfaced in my heart. I felt like she was drifting further and further away from me.
Everything she created around me felt like a facade. It even felt like the person standing in front of me wasn't the Abigail I once knew.
Then again, I had no idea what exactly had changed.
Suddenly, I heard Abigail calling my name.
"Samuel? Samuel?"
I snapped out of my thoughts. I raised my head, glanced at Abigail, and hesitantly asked, "What is it?"
She looked at me, her gaze filled with doubt. "Samuel, what was on your mind? I've been talking to you for a while, but you didn't respond at all."
"Ah…" I hesitated to answer, for I was unsure of what to say. After a while, I decided to be direct and asked, "Abigail, did you really go to the office to work overtime today?"
"Hmm?" I didn't quite understand what Abigail was getting at. Puzzled, I asked, "Call you for what?"
Abigail put down her fork and knife. Her eyes were filled with seriousness as she stared at me. "I came home so late, so why didn't you call to check on me? To ask if I was coming home or what I was doing?"
Her face was so sincere, as if she was genuinely blaming me for not caring about her.
I replied flatly, "Did you forget? You used to hate it when I called you for that. You said it made you feel like you were being monitored or like I didn't trust you.
"I've remembered that ever since and never forgotten it for a second. That's why I didn't contact you. I didn't want to be the person who made you feel that way."
Upon hearing my answer, Abigail's expression changed. Her eyes widened, and her lips quivered slightly. She hesitated for a long time, but in the end, she didn't say a single word.
