I nodded, remaining silent.
Abigail suddenly fixed her gaze on me, her expression serious. "You really don't need to stay here to take care of her."
She stepped closer, enunciating each word carefully. "I can hire two caregivers to take turns looking after Lana."
Hearing her words, I offered a faint smile. No matter how professional a caregiver might be, they could never care for Lana the way a family member would.
With Lana's surgery approaching, I couldn't afford any risks.
Abigail's words carried an unspoken meaning. Lana wasn't my biological sister. What I had done for her was already more than enough. Why go to such lengths? What could I possibly gain?
I suddenly found it laughable. The Abigail I thought had changed was, deep down, still the same selfish and indifferent woman.
I took a deep breath and shook my head lightly. "It's fine. I'll take care of her myself."
Abigail's expression tightened, as if she wanted to say more. But I explained softly, "Lana has no family. Someone needs to be there for her."
My voice dropped to a near whisper. "When Kayla was sick, I wasn't by her side, and that led to us being separated by life and death. I lost Kayla forever. Lana was Kayla's best friend. I can't let something happen to her too."
Abigail fell silent, but the next moment, she suddenly took my hand.
I looked at her, puzzled. "What's wrong?"
She hesitated before saying, "Samuel, I'm really sorry about Kayla."
Abigail's eyes widened, and she was at a loss for words. "Don't… don't say things like that."
Her words almost made me laugh. To her, my illness was nothing more than a pretense.
I shook my head. "Don't worry about me. I'm not a child. I can take care of myself."
Seeing my resolve, Abigail finally fell silent.
Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, her expression hardening as if she were bracing for a confrontation.
It wasn't hard to guess who was calling. That manipulative figure was surely plotting to lure Abigail away again.
