"I-I…" I stuttered.
I didn't know how to respond to her words.
At that moment, all I could do was look at her awkwardly.
Just then, Abigail suddenly came up to me and grabbed my hand. She asked in a gentle tone, "Samuel, were you waiting here for me on purpose?"
My brows furrowed tightly as my eyes filled with disappointment.
In the past, when we were together, I stood by her side as her lover. But now, to her, I seemed to be nothing more than a pet that she could call and dismiss as needed. Only her decisions mattered, and I had no autonomy.
I lowered my head and avoided her question. Instead, I asked softly, "Are you hungry? I'll go make you something to eat."
I got up and went to the kitchen. I thought that as long as I could get away from her, I might finally be able to catch my breath. But reality proved me wrong.
She had no intention of letting me go. She followed me to the kitchen, standing close by and watching as I busied myself.
Feeling a little uncomfortable, I looked at her and forced a smile, urging her, "Abigail, you should step outside. The kitchen is full of greasy fumes. It's not good to get that smell on you."
While I said that, I was secretly hoping that she would leave quickly so that we wouldn't have to share the same space.
However, she wouldn't relent. She stared at me calmly and said, "I like being with you."
She liked being with me? Those words felt so foreign to my ears.
If it were in the past, when Abigail was deeply in love with me, I would've believed her without hesitation. But now…
Her persistent questioning sent a chill through my heart.
I didn't know how to answer her. I simply stared at her blankly, hesitating before asking, "Is it your birthday, or perhaps some kind of anniversary?"
Ever since I became ill, my memory started to fail me. Many things started slipping my mind over time.
But the torment and humiliation I endured at Abigail's hands seemed to be permanently etched in my soul, an indelible stain of shame.
So, I stopped trying to remember anything unnecessary. It was less painful that way.
However, Abigail's questions now filled me with anxiety. A wave of unease washed through me.
Sure enough, she slowly looked up to meet my eyes, then said slowly, emphasizing every word, "It's our wedding anniversary."
