I leaned against the door of the ICU, covering my face as I sobbed.
At that moment, I truly understood what it meant to feel powerless.
I hadn't been able to protect Kayla before, not even being able to fulfill my promise to take her to the sea. And I couldn't protect her fellow patients or her best friend, Lana, either.
The thought overwhelmed me, and tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
I didn't know how long I cried until a passing nurse noticed my distress. She approached me with concern and asked, "Sir, are you okay? Do you need to rest for a bit?"
With her help, I managed to stand and wave her off gently. "No, but thank you for your concern."
I couldn't let my own despair hinder someone else's work.
After resting briefly, I struggled to support myself and walked to the hospital corridor. I sat there for a long time, trying to pull myself together.
Lana's condition was critical, but I didn't dare rush Abigail. She needed time to contact her connections and check if the doctors were available.
Abigail had finally agreed to help me. If I pushed too hard and annoyed her, she might withdraw her support entirely. She had done things like that before.
Just then, Abigail called me.
"Where are you? Pack up and come home. I'll make you something nice for dinner tonight, okay?"
Her voice was so soft and gentle that it felt surreal. For a moment, I wondered if she had lost her memory.
When I approached, the owner smiled politely and said, "Just give me the key, and we'll handle everything. I promise we won't damage any of your belongings."
Hearing this, I forced a bitter smile and shook my head helplessly as I said, "I… I don't have much. One suitcase is enough."
"Huh?"
The owner looked stunned but reassured me nonetheless, then headed inside to pack up my things.
When I returned to the home Abigail and I once shared, everything felt strangely unfamiliar. For a moment, I had the unsettling feeling that I didn't recognize this place at all.
Martha saw me and greeted me with a cheerful smile. It seemed like she had finally realized that I was the real man of the house.
